Advice on what to pay for body work?

I got the rust fixed on my truck. You can see the rust here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...flares-124621/ Anyways, I don't have any pics to post right now, but the guy cut out about a 2-3" piece of metal around the rear fenders and welded metal back in it's place. After the welding, he bondo'd over it and sanded it down. On the front driver side fender, he cut out the rust and patched up a small hole. On the pass side front, he installed a new fender. It took him 5 days to do all the work, which seems like a looong time to me. I paid for all the materials, borrowed a welder from my uncle & he used my garage to do the work. He is my buddy's dad and used to do body work, but is now retired. I asked him how much do I owe him and he said to give him whatever I thought was fair. I don't know crap about prices on this stuff. I want to be fair, but don't want to pay for 5 days of work. I asked him twice BEFORE the work started for a quote, but he said to not worry about it, to pay him once I was happy with the work. What do you guys think is a fair price to pay? How much would this have cost me at a body shop? I think he'll be fine with whatever I give him, but I want to be fair.

dude. you broke the first law of business. price should have been agreed upon before he started along with a written agreement, just to be safe. he put 40 hours in working on your truck?
are you happy with the results?
find out how many hours he actually worked.

Ya. I know! It didn't start how I wanted, but I was expecting the opposite. I thought he was gona give me a rediculous bill. I was preparing to argue why not to pay so much. Now it will be on my conscience if I pay him too little. How much would something like that cost at a body shop? Regardless of hours? At least my paint will be here Thurs and I will do that work myself! Oh and ya, I'm happy with the work.
