Adding Rear Window Defroster to 1st Gen - Practical?

Hey everyone,

I have a bare bones '85 4Runner which didn't come with the rear window defroster. This certainly will become a problem during the winter months and I'm wondering if there is any practical way to fix this.

Would I be able to look for a rear window with the defrost capability and a switch for the dash and somehow wire it into the fuse block?

Let me know if anyone has ever thought of, or attempted this, or if I should just stick to anti-fog spray . . .

Justin

PS: My 4Runner is in the shop getting inspected as we speak so cross your fingers for me. I took it to a NJ State inspection facility and they told me they couldn't do it at that station because it was considered a "high-rise vehicle" and I would have to take it to 1 of 3 stations geographically scattered throughout the state capable to do it.

I'm gonna do that sometime too. I figure all I need is a relay, fuse and wires. I've already got the switch in the dash and the rear window with lines. Couldn't be that difficult.

Hmm, push a button or freeze your balls off? Why wouldn't you want rear defrost? It's just a nice convenient way of letting you see out the back if it's fogged or frosted over without having to stop and get out of the car over and over. You certainly could drive without the ability to see out the rear window, but if you could see why wouldn't you? It's just another one of those "mods" that is now standard on a lot of vehicles, doesn't keep you from driving but certainly is nice to have.
