ADD to manual hubs, 4wd no workie

I have a 91 4runner I did a 3.4 swap on (which shouldnt really have any affect on this). I swapped out the ADD hubs with factory manual hubs, and locked the actuator over. I have verified that both hubs engage and disengage as they are supposed to. When I put it in 4lo, the rear end gears down super low as it should, but my front just doesnt lock. Like I said, I have verified the hubs are locked correctly and have locked the actuator fork....what else should I be looking for?

Did the actuator fork move? or did you lock it in the wrong position?

Are you sure it doesn't work or does the light just not come on?

I assumed maybe the collar slipped when put the actuator on the first time, so I even pulled it off to make sure the fork locked the collar, and it was good. I know the front is not locking though; even though it gears down low in 4lo like it should, the front wheels arent getting any power, so the back still spins on dirt

An easy way to test if your 4wd is engaging or not.
Jack up the back of your vehicle from the axle until the back wheels no longer touch.
Engage 4wd, then try to drive off the jack.
If it works, then 4wd works, if not, you know for sure.

If you followed the write-up here, the actuator is in the wrong position. I've contacted a moderator but the bad info is still there.

Correct 'engaged' position:

Put it in 2wd, front wheels off the ground, hubs locked, and turn one side. The other side should spin the opposite direction if the differential is engaged properly (assuming you don't have a locker).

Wow, that would probably be why it doesnt work then! That is the write-up that I went by. Good to know!I will have to lock it to the other side and see if it works. Thank you!

Just read that other thread. It's FULL of bad info.! It really does need to be deleted.

BMcEL 05-15-2012 10:23 AM

I've contacted another moderator. Hopefully they do something about it. I want to know first of all how that thread made it into the write-up section, and second how it's still there 2.5 years later.

We are looking into it right now BMcEL

Thanks for the heads up

Moved the thread into the staff section.

BMcEL, do you have a writeup or the correct info I can post into that thread so we can bring it back correctly?

BMcEL 05-15-2012 11:58 AM

The 4x4wire article has good info. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/

Yes, BMcEL, you are the man. I would probably have been chasing all sorts of gremlins and taking apart my diff if you didnt reply! Thank you!

Just trying to save some headaches. Thanks to the mods for getting it straightened out.
