AC R12 to R134a Swap and General AC Maintenance 1988 4Runner 22RE

As the title states, I have a 1988 4Runner, 22RE, 5-speed with factory AC and I would like to upgrade from R-12 to R-134a. I have searched here and Google, but only found spotty info on AC repair/upgrade/maintenance.

I purchased my 4Runner a few years ago with a "blown head gasket"... Several thousand dollars later I am down to the AC system and it is hot here in AZ right now so I would like to make it work! AC has never worked, everything is hooked up so there are no open lines that I can see--doesn't mean the system is without leaks, however.

I want to upgrade the system to R-134a. From what I understand I need to flush the system with solvent and remove all the R-12 oil as it is not compatible with R-134a. I also needs to change the fittings, replace the dryer and maybe the condensor.

So...

1) Where is the best place to get parts--is there a kit?
2) Should I replace the compressor? I don't know anything about it, except is is there and it spins.
3) Any good links to posts, pages or videos that show how to do the job?
4) Did I miss anything? Would you do anything else?

Thanks for any help and info you can provide!

I purchased a 94 Toyota truck- 22 RE, 5 speed with AC, R-12. The air did not work so I had a shop check it for leaks. They check and found no leaks. I ask about R12- Well you know the $. The shop suggested filling with 134, and see what happens. It has worked fine for almost a year. Total cost $53.

getting a local a/c shop to check it first is a good idea. ask them where to get the kits.
i thought most cars and/or trucks had a/c conversion kits for this.
parts are usually available at local autoparts places.
i do not have any real details on this, just what i have seen.
