About Propane injection...
 

With gas prices on the rise to a predicted $4.00 a gallon this summer, I have come to two solutions to my problem. Sell the 87 2wd p/u that has been in my grandfathers possession since 87, and mine just recently, and get a similar diesel vehicle to convert to bio diesel. OR: convert my 22r into propane injection. What I'm trying to find out is exactly how cost efficient would this be? What are the pros and cons of propane injected vehicles? Is this something I can put in a kit and be done with or do I have to re-configure the whole fuel system? I will contact LC engineering later, but I am just curious of your opinions first. propane is not DOT approved.

I have checked out "gotpropane.com" and it sounds like it is a good idea to go this route. However, it says that it is reccomended for trail rigs and rock crawlers. I'll have to check into that. It also states that they use about 5-6 gallons running a truck on serious trails all day. I'll have to see how much propane is per gallon, or pound and figure that out. This is going to take a bit of research and definitely a lot of money if I go through with it.

I saw this on Trucks, and figured it would be what I would get, but it is very expensive. I figure if gas prices are on the rise it would be a good investment though.

So does that mean that you can't run it on the road if it's not DOT approved? Sounds like if you don't have emissions in your county you don't have to worry about it.

I've never heard of propane injection on a gas motor. I've only of heard of doing it to diesel motors. Doesn't mean anything, I've just never heard of it. Guess it would work the same?

Propane sucks. I used to use a plow truck that was propane. You use a TON of propane and you have about half the power. On these trucks you could switch between gas and propane so you could see the difference easily.

The same setup was on 3 trucks and they all were the same.

I used to run an old Bobcat 742 loader that ran on gas or propane. Early to mid 80's they were used a lot in equipment rental. Seemed like it was a simple set up.

They used to do it because propane was so cheap. It made up for the consumption and lack of performance. Now it is not the case.

I just filled up at $1.25 a litre up here in BC, thats like $4.70 a gallon right now.

But on topic, I have heard that propane will really turn your truck into a slug

I wouldn't sell the truck, I'd buy something else.

I don't know much about it. Your best bet is probably diesel. Or a motorcycle.

Seems like your getting a little ahead of yourself here. Why not keep the 2wd and drive it on a daily basis and break out the runner on the weekends. I want to say that i have seen a pic or two of the 2wd your talking about. Just take the topper off of it and drive it. Getting that weight off of it would help with the MPG's. Biodiesel is a good idea if you can make it...

Propane used to be very popular back in the 80's when there was a spike in gas prices. Propane prices were cheap back then so it made sense. I don't know that prices today make it all that practical. The reason propane is so popular for rock crawling is that it isn't affected by angles like a carb metering gas is. You can also mount the fuel cylinder anywhere which is a lot easier than trying to relocate a gas tank.

Availability would be my concern. It really limits your range if you don't know where you can fill up easily. I know - most U-hauls sell it and so do a lot of camping places but those places all close at 5 and then what do you do for fuel until morning?

First of all, I know how expensive gas is in different parts of the world, it sucks for yall. But me being still in high school with a crappy job, money is tight and with this rise in prices I won't be able to afford to keep up my trucks, pay for gas and upgrade at the same time. So yes, I am scared of $4.00 a gallon. :moon:

That looks like a cool idea, I wish he had the estimated price he spent on it. I also I better understood electronics to be able to go through with the conversion. :hillbill:

i wish i could i just looked up mpg on google and got a link to that the blue prints are 95 bucks and everything else is from 5k to 7k for a dot car that gets 128mpg i really want one and i wish i had the 7k to build it man other then that i dont know much about it buddy i wish i could help you out on it sorry


uses a spitfire frame 17hp 3cly motor and a 5 spped trany top speed is 65 to 85 other then that dont know sorry
