95 auto 3.0 4runner tune up guide help
I think I need a tune up, I know I did not buy a honda civic or toyota prius. But I'm getting close to 290miles on a tankful. Not sure how low that gas light goes off at but I've yet to run out of gas. Also I'm not sure if I have a 16g or 18g tank. The time's i've run it that low I've usually only had to put a max of 16gallons in it. I'm sure 290 miles per tank is not disgraceful but I'd like to think I can get closer to 20mpg.
I typically drive the hwy speed 75mph but even going down to 70 has not increased it any if much at all. I have a url from TC on how to check the 02 sensor but as of yet not had a chance to check it. I bought this 4runner used with no records of any type. What all should I start checking/replacing to see if i can creep the mpg up a little.

20mpg (sprry haha) is pretty good, I get that with my truck every now and then. Do you have an auto or manual?
Id replace the spark plugs, just get NGK v or g powers, 2.50 - 3$ a piece. Gap them correctly, I like to use feeler gauges.
Then if your spark plug wires look old and nasty, replace those, I replaced mine the other day and got some NGK wires from napa for $50. My old ones werent connecting on the spark plugs very well so my motor would have a miss.
You cant really get the mileage up past 20 or so because this motor is a pig but im sure those will help your in town mileage.

Maybe I mis spoke, I am getting between 16-18mpg depending on if I have a 16g or 18g tank. I'm not sure what size it is. I was hoping I could increase it to 20mpg or close as possible atleast. O and I have an K&N air filter that is clean best I can tell. O and it is a automatic

It doesn't matter what size your tank is....
fill up the tank...drive for a while, write down the miles, go fill up...
divide the gas you put back with the miles you covered.....done.
It's more accurate if you can go back to the same pump cause everypump varies on the auto stop.
Never top off your tank after it stop.

Guess thats the price I have to pay to comfortably car camp and get up some 4x4 trails my daily driver S10 PU will not make. Think the ISR mod would be better or worse for gas mileage?

16-18 MPG on the 3.0 doesn't sound too bad. It could be alot worse. I don't know where you're from, but I'm gonna guess it's somewhere that doesn't have "winter" fuel. I average 16mpg (17 on a good day) during the summer and right now until about April, I'm gonna have to live with the 13 mpg that winter fuel provides.

I dont know if we have the switchover to "winter" fuel up here in Maine.... but I actually get better mpg's, and a bit more giddy up in the winter.... colder it is, the better they run.

if i got 290 miles to a tank........ well, thats a wet dream.
94 3.0 runner with 158000 on the clock, recently tuned etc... i get 13.5 on average, im fairly easy on her being as there is no sense in pushin her faster than she can go. however she does have 33 1250's on.
