If you have access to a cooling system pressure tester pump the system up and let it sit. watch for pressure drop, fast? slow? none? pull the spark plugs and roll the engine over with a wrench on the crank bolt. A bad head gasket will allow coolant into one or more of the cylinders and you will see it come out the spark plug hole. If a head gasket has just started leaking and is not terrible yet you can get pressure blow by into the system/radiator when running without much coolant getting into the cylinder and causing tons of white smoke. catalytic converters heat up so much that a small amount of water/coolant in the exhaust will be hard to notice.

Too Hot?
I have a 1994 v6 3.0 pickup it always ran warm but ever sisnce the cold weather came in it gets too close to the red on the thermostat for my liking. When I start it up to go to work, the thermostat starts at the half way mark then quickly creeps closer and closer to the red line. It only ever goes in to the red line if I'm in stop and go traffic other than that it's just bearly outside of the red. The only real trouble shooting I've done is ensure it has adiquit oil no coolant in it and conferm that the entire radiator heats up when opperating, which it does. The heat does come on in the cab.
Any ideas on how to fix what's going on? Thanks
