94 PU Transmission Issue
 

Long time no see fellas,

I honestly haven't messed with my truck in a few years now other than to change the oil etc., but I'm having some weird issues and I need some advice.
I have a 94 PU 22-re, 5spd, 4x4.
About a month ago I started getting a little slip when shifting from 3rd to 4th. My rpms would go super high then seem to catch and drop down to a normal range. It only happened if I got on it hard, so I backed off on my habitual heavy acceleration and mostly forgot about it. Then last week I had to stop behind a turning car right at the bottom of a hill, and as I accelerated up the hill my foot went to the floor and my RPMs hit 4500 while I quit accelerating. Scared the crap out of me. But after letting off on the gas and downshifting I was back on the road no problem.
As of today the truck drives fine, unless I load it up or try to accelerate up a steep hill.

Anybody got any ideas? My mechanic wants to change the clutch, my boss says planetary gears, my dad says clutch master cylinder.

It's the clutch, unless it's oil on the clutch; then you gotta fix the leak and change the clutch too.

There ain't no planetary gears in a Toyota manual tranny.

Clutch master C. causing slippage, not likely.

If its the clutch, why is it so specific? Shouldn't it slip across the board?
Not saying your wrong, just curious.

If ya keep driving it it will eventually slip 'across the board'; then finally it would fail to move the truck at all.

Right now the clutch slips only at high torque loading and still holds while subject to lighter loads.

Absolutely typical worn, or oily clutch behavior.

My beater / daily, hatchback has the same symptoms and diagnosis.

It's a typical failure mode, to slip entering or exiting 3rd.
