94 4runner transfer case replacement cost

1st time poster here. I have a 94 4runner, 125,000 miles, V6 with a manual transmission, and somehow my transfer case ran dry and I have to have it replaced. This local transmission place can replace it with a used one (40-50,000 miles), and they are quoting me about $1500 for everything (parts, labor fluids). Is this high? I have no idea what these things cost myself, and I'm not getting my own hands into this thing. Their estimate just for removing the transfer case, checking it and putting it back on again was about $700. Thanks for any info I can get on this.

That sounds high.

www.car-parts.com may have what you are looking for.

I bought one from e-bay for my 95 manual. Cost $58 w/ $58 shipping. Took about four hours to put in, so sounds a little high.

Thats the same guy I bought mine from, and it's even cheaper... almost cheap enough to buy as a spare ........

The guy was easy to deal w/ and the case was nice and quiet when I put it in.

I have a V6 Tcase sitting in the garage I can let go fairly cheap. It was removed when I had my dual Marlin installed. And I'm in the Bay Area. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the advice and offers. In my case, I needed the car back relatively fast, and before I had the shop look at it, I didn't even know it was the transfer case, so I had them do it. Could I have done this myself? Probably, but not within the timeframe I needed my car back. In any case, my truck runs perfect again now.

This statement and "is this price high" go hand in hand in many posts. Basically anything you need done now is going to cost you no matter if you do it yourself (cost you more time and money) or if you have someone else do it (cost you money and possibly shady work).
