'94 3vze crankshaft timing gear play?
I just replaced the head gaskets and when replacinig the t belt, I pulled the CS timing gear. It seems that the crud that was holding the gear in is no longer there and now there is a good 5+ degrees of play. So I went ahead and put the t-belt back on following the alignment procedure. Is it normal to have the CS timing gear at mark then, put CS pulley on and have the timing notch off by 5+ degrees?
Did I not put the gear key in correctly?
Would like to get some input before I put on the fan clutch cover portion on only to have to back track a bunch.

That would not be normal for any engine. I dont have a 3vze. and I dont have a manual in front of me. What was the crud you are talking about , rust? Thats the only thing that would remove material from the crank, gear or key. Is there a removable key in the crankshaft? If there is, its sheared or the slot in the gear damaged.

Inspect the grooves the woodruff key sits in on both the CS and gear. If it is "wallowed out" on either component that would cause play. If that is the case, hopefully the damaged groove is in the gear because, although it is a few $$, that can be replaced easily.

The crank is harder than the key or gear by design. If the key is damaged, I bet the gear is to. Both are cheap. A Toyota dealership on line is the cheapest place to get OEM parts. 5 derees movment is more than a little worn.

The woodruff key is a buck, part no. 280-05005, http://www.toyotapartszone.com/Page_...ponentsIndex=9. The pulley (408-65011) is over $250. But if the key doesn't fit snugly into the pulley (and into the crank), you'll need to spend the money.

Upon further inspection, the gear is shot too. Thanx for pressing the issue to replace the gear, folks. I wouldn't have noticed unless you mentioned it. And Sam, you're right. 5 degrees is a lot. I'm sure the engine wouldn't run well if at all like that. Thank you thank you!

Yes, "Crankshaft Timing Pulley" (which carries the timing belt) P/N 521-65011 would be the more important part. But I believe the key also extends into the "Crankshaft Pulley" (sometimes called Harmonic balancer) as well. While the big one won't affect valve timing, if the keyway is worn enough to produce wobble it will probably need to be replaced before it messes up the crank itself.

The Toyota online parts dealership catalog calls it a "Crankshaft Timing gear" and the service manual calls it a "Crankshaft timing pulley" , but I think it should be called the "Crankshaft timing pulley gear cog".
And yes, if the pulley is bad I would try to find a junkyard one first. If the keway is damaged it could loosen/ move and make it very hard to set your ignition timing.

In the middle of changing the t-belt and water pump and am having the same problem, wood ruff key and slot is all wore out on the crank timing gear. found it funny that it still ran great. so now i am hunting for a new gear.

Bumping an old thread.
Anyone have a picture of what the keys looks like? Is it just a normal woodruff key?
Seems the bolt holding the pulley came loose and knocked the key back into the gear. Seems the key shouldant be able to be pushed in, but ive seen em like that on other things.
Edit: That part link above has a note that says "L=18,OD=8"... Guess Ill go look and see what I have for a key now.
Edit part duex: Its all my fault. I just didnt have the gear on all the way. Alls good in the way of the 3vze now.
