94 22re will not start, little help please

Merry Christmas eve, Eve all.

What I did:
New timing kit, cap and rotor, plugs, wires, ignition coil, fuel filter, fuel lines,
What happens: Turns over, gets spark, gets fuel, cranks strong, just won't start.
Couple of troubleshooting things I did today:
tried to advance and retard distributor, removed tension from belts, checked all fuses under hood, tried to start with that clutch disengage switch.

Any thoughts on what I am missing?

Thanks much.

are you sure you got the cam timing right?

is the distributor oriented properly?

put a timing light on it and see where the timing is while cranking. It should be somewhere near 5deg btdc, not necessarily right on it but at least in the ballpark.

I followed instructions from DeathCougar and did the following:

I put the mark at 0, rotor was at #1.
I rotated until at 0 again, rotor was then at #3, just like it was described.
I then took distributor out and reset to #1.
I tried starting it, and it did not start.
It cranked and cranked, but did not start. It sounds like it wants to, but wont.

If additional info will help, I have also done/seen the following:
I checked to be sure I was getting fuel at the cold start and I am.
I sprayed a little starting fluid and it burns that off.

At one point the (VSV checkvalve) for the PAIR valve spurted out air/white smoke. Starting fluid does not start the engine. It simply burnt up inside the throttle body and blew a flame out past the throttle plate.

thanks for answering.

Please forgive me,

I started a thread in Newbies also. I thought I may have posted incorrectly here :bang: . if you so choose to see additional details please see this link:

So when u took the distributor out the mark was on 0, the nipple on the cam gear was at 12 oclock and the rotor was pointing toward one. That's TDC. Thats where you want to be when you change timing chain and lots of other maintenance.

I know for sure the mark was at 0. I cannot say with any accuracy if the other two points apply. This was my first time doing this kind of job, and I had many inconsistencies.
What would be my next step if I did not have the second two points correct in reassembly? Pull the cover off and start over?

Many thanks.

Well if you are positive you have spark, and you're positive you have fuel, then it has to be the timing.

Plug wires in right order (sorry, gotta ask). Pulling any codes?

MMA_Alex 12-23-2007 08:41 PM

could also be a lack of compression. more likely ignition timing is way off though

Onebadmudder 12-24-2007 03:19 AM

If the above points were not lined up when u put the chain on then your timing is off. Go get a Haynes Manual and do the job according to it. I am 99% sure you have a timing issue.

x10 on the timing issue. Double check to make sure the chain lined up the cam and crankshaft markers and that the distributor was set correctly. Find someone who knows how to set the distributor timing first before you take apart the timing cover etc...

NO need at all to be sorry, its the little things sometimes huh! (I don't have electronics to check for codes.) I have checked this(wires in correct location) four times, to be 100% sure. I am going to pull the head cover and check where the cam mark is.

Anyone listening in the Cleveland area? I've got Christmas Ale!!:banger:

Ok, cam mark is pointing at about 1:00 with mark at 0 #1 valve is loose.

No more work today it's cold w/o a garage.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!<><

MMA_Alex 12-24-2007 07:32 AM

checking the codes is free...connect the te1 and e1 ports in the diagnostic connector on the passengers side fender, and turn the key to on, and count the check engine light flashes

Targetnut 12-24-2007 04:17 PM

sounds like a cam timing isue to me.

with the crank pulley aligned on tdc, the cam sprocket mark should be at about the 11:50 o'clock position. the dowel that aligns the cam sprocket on the camshaft should be at 12:00 o'clock.

Not good news except that you know what to do now.

Merry Christmas
