93 3.0 v6 needs a tune-up. Can anyone help?

Hi there,

I'm located in San Francisco and my '93 v6 pickup needs to have the timing belt, water pump, and pulleys replaced. I would like to do the job myself but I'm scared to screw anything up...

Any volunteers? I'll provide the pizza & beer

I was a little nervous about doing mine too. If you're reasonably mechanically inclined, you can do it. There are several writeups on here how to do it.

I still insist on having someone watch over my back and give me hints. I cannot afford to make a mistake.

try this:

i did mine over the christmas holidays, go slow and read things as often as you need to make sure you have it right. its a time consuming job but doable by yourself. im pretty sure there are a few members nearby that may be willing to help out.

good luck and keep us posted.

it says you need several different SST tools and a shop press...?

I can't imagine what you would need the press for...

The SST's make things more convenient, but aren't necessary. (I didn't use any!)

It says in the instructions that you have to remove the power steering pump pully and the pump itself from the engine.. do I actually have to remove the power steering pump?

The PS pump is the biggest PITA in everything you're about to do. I highly recommend you remove the PS Pump and the radiator, too. I didn't and it made things a lot more difficult.

I don't mind removing the PS pump... however, I would like to know how exactly it should be removed. It looks like the pulley needs to be removed first, how do I remove the pulley? There is a screw on it I think, do I unscrew it counter-clockwise? How can I unscrew it without having the pulley move?

Also, the step where they say disconnect PS pump from engine, do I actually have to remove all of the connections to the pump, or should I just keep it connected but move it aside from its mounting location?

I was never able to remove my pulley; I ended up bending the crap out of it with a 6-foot steel bar and it STILL didn't come loose. Good thing I was replacing it anyway!
