'92 truck with a thud
 

Hey all, my 92 extra-cab 4x4 v6 auto has a thud when I stop quickly. Sometimes it will thud as I let off the brake. It is not a noise issue but a feeling.
I notice the shifter move slightly when it does this. It shifts normally. I suspect it may be a motor mount. Am I close?

I have the same problem, although I don't notice the shifter moving. I suspect in my case the tranny is due for a rebuild. The previous owner used the truck for towing and had 108K on the odometer when I bought it.

I think it is the tranny downshifting harder than normal. Anyone else?

you may want to do a search on axle wrap, might shed some light. the other options are to check all your drive line bolts are tight, u-joints, engine and trans mounts etc.

I failed to mention it has 173,000 miles and the shifter itself is not as tight as others I have driven. With that I mean side to side movement.
Again it seems to shift normally, no hard shifting when it down shifts while passing. Up shifts do not seem to be abnormal. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!!

I have gone under and checked bolts and have not heard the traditional thud sound as I have heard with u-joints going out.
In an unrelated matter, I just received a recall notice for my 92 on the steering rod.

If the shifter is sloppy then you probably need to replace the bushings. The bushings are cheap and should only take about 20 minutes to replace.

Have you lubed your slip joint on the drive shaft? Toyotas have a issue with the slip joint binding sometimes when stopping then letting off the brake which unloads the drive train causing a bump feeling. Anyone with a two piece drive shaft has it some worse than others, They say you can file the corners a little on the slines and it will help but not fix.
