92' pickup 22re wont start after running

In Trouble... I have a 92 Toyota pickup 22re that wont start after being run several times during the day. It starts right up cold first crank. Second and even third starts are no problem. But if i have driven it a couple of times and stopped in between when i go to start it it cranks and then makes a chugging sound like it isnt getting enough fuel. I recently replaced the fuel tank, fuel filter, fuel screen, and fuel sending unit but left the original pump as it was working fine before i added the new parts. Cold Start Injector? Pump? i'm stumped here Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you certain its not trouble with the starter? Had the same issue with my '93 and turned out the starter was on the verge of being burnt out. But if your sure its fuel related then Id look into your fuel pressure regulator. Try turning the key to acc. ,Hold it a second then try starting it.

Thanks Chris. Not certain of anything. I just figured it was fuel related on a hunch. If it was the starter wouldnt it give me trouble every time? It cold starts like a champ. I'll give that key turning trick a shot but will have to wait until i can recreate the problem and then report back. In the mean time keep the advice rollin fellas i need all i can get.

You would think so. But thats exactly what my starter did.

So now she just flat out wont start. I haven't replaced that starter yet but today when the truck wouldn't start i tried to roll it forward a few rotations and tapped the starter with a hammer. Even tried to roll start it without any success. Instead of chugging for fuel now its just the classic crank but not turning over. Im at my wits end with this thing.

How are the fuel lines? Any leaks anywhere?
When was the fuel filter changed (I doubt you could plug it all the way)?

Engines need fuel, air and spark.
Are you getting spark?
Any restrictions in the air path?
Are you getting fuel?

Get a fuel pressure gauge, most automotive shops can supply one.
You might have toasted your fuel pump.

My truck had a similar issue before I sold it.
Sadly, I never managed to fix the issue as it only occured when the engine was hot needed a restart after running errands.

i changed the fuel filter a week ago. i am new to this engine and not much of a mechanic to begin with. I know im getting spark. How do i go about checking if its getting air and fuel? Many thanks for all the advice.

Check if the air filter is plugged or not.
Check the intake runner tube (black tube behind the rad, running from airbox to intake manifold.
Check the inside of the intak manifold, how much black goo is inside there? Does it look like it's blocking anything off.

Fuel pressure is check with a fuel pressure gauge. Check it at the fuel tube if possible.

Get your hands on the service manual for your truck and start reading.
