92 P/U loses fuel pressure, misses in higher RPMs...Carb Swap?

ok ill try this again.
I have a 92 P/u 22RE that ive had problems with since i got it. It'll run good for about 20-30 miles then it'll start missing as it revs out past 2500rpm. I've brought it to 3 local shops and all of them hooked them up to the diagnostic machine an it hasnt came up with any codes. here are parts I've replace or that have been checked out
-All wiring has been gone over, the motor in the truck had obviously been replaced, and goiong by the #on the block, it looks like an 88 model
-Computer (Repaced with one out of an 88, same problem)
-Mass Air Flow Sensor (Re-man unit)
-Ignitor
-Fuel Pump
-All Filters
-Cap& rotor, plugs, wires
We hooked up a fuel pressure gauge an drove it till the problem came up. While its missing, fuel pressure drops to 7lbs.
Another quirk- you can turn off the igniton an turn it back on an drive it for another 5-10 min no problems.
Will the motor being an earlier model be a problem?
Ive brought the truck to all the so-called Toyota experts around here, I have no experience with this new-fangled computer BS. How hard would it be to swap this thing over to a carb? Better yet, how bout a SBChevy?

I'd solve the fuel pressure issue.
My guess would be one of two things:
1) Fuel pressure regulator. This physically determines the fuel pressure by deciding how much fuel to route into the return. It's a diaphram that measures against vacuum. Make sure your fuel filter is good, *maybe* inspect the sock on your fuel pump.
2) The AFM has a flapper that determines when to turn on the pump. Try by-passing the AFM (see 4crawlers page) see if this changes the behavior.

Fix that fuel pressure issue, I bet you'll do fine...
The fuel pressure has nothing to do with the "computer BS".

dcg9381 is right, your fuel pressure has nothing to do with your computer, and having an older engine is no different. All 22-re's have the same computer, only 22-r and 22-ret have different computers. As for the fuel pressure issue, start with your fuel rail and work your way back, eventually you will find your issue. You can swap for a carb. but if you have emissions test it will not pass.

Ok. ill go back over the whole fuel system again. Maybe vapor lock?
As for the emissions test, down here in Alabama it wouldn't be a problem. An one of the mechanics had told me that the truck was losing fire and the computer somehow would cut the fuel off when this happens?

22RE? That'd be EFI, not a carb.

i would check the fuel pump sounds like its givein out on you. the fuel pressure regulator would only increase the fuel pressure if it was bad. likke what woods86 said go over the whole system youll find your problem than maby try and flush it out.

Get a new mechanic. One that knows toyotas.

The fuel pump turns on when the ignition is on and there is air flow. Pull off the coil ("no fire") and she'll still pump fuel.
