92 4runner trailer wiring......where do i start?
I tried to wire my 92 4 runner so i could legally pull a trailer. (Its a 4 wire plug)
But, i couldnt find where to splice the wires in? I read in another post that 2nd gens have a converter box around the rear quarter to splice into, but no luck finding it. I need your guys help, all input is appreciated.
Also, do i need a conversion harness or can i simply splice into existing wire.

thanx rocket, could you also tell me where that converter box is, or where exactly the group of wires runs to the back of the truck so i could simply splice into it.
Ill probably buy that harness, but im limited on time and would like to get this wired up soon.

I would tell you more info but i'm at work right now and don't eactly remember all the wiring. In the last year, i've installed 3 different trailer wiring harnesses on the 3 different vehicles so...
hopefully somebody else can help you with splicing because i didn't have to do that.
I'm pretty sure my harness just pluged into/behind each tail light (where you can disconnect the factory wiring).

Actually if you go to Napa, there is a harness sold by Hoppy that plugs into your existing harness without the need to cut and splice anything. About 25 bucks IIRC.

ill take a look under mine tomorrow.
when i rented from uhaul 3 years ago they redid my trailer wiring....well it was acting up again so I had a looksie at their work. Being an installer I know what to look for when stuff goes wrong...lol Well their crimp connects had started to work loose, so I cut each one to length, soldered it, then loomed. Now it looks great under there! lol
But yeah Ill see where those wires go to since its been a while

If you can find one at NAPA or some other store, then i'd definitely do that that rather than splice your OEM wiring. Is there a Tractor Supply Co. near you? Or a place that sells trailers? Break open your phone book and make some calls. Uhaul might even have one.

I did mine myself but the brakes and headlights come back as two seperate wires, so I had to choose between them.

No luck at Walmart or Napa, local automotive shop has something, but i have to run a power source off the battery, along with splicing into wires, and it costs 80cdn. Not sure if thats the best route

hey falko!
if you dont have a tsc (tractor supply) you might want to check out princess auto, they should have one of those kits. mine was started by the po but never finished, a buddy and i spent about an hour tops getting everything done.
ive since added a 7 pin set up as i have access to a camper that has electric brakes and charges the trailer battery while you travel.

HMM, as far as I know HOPPY only makes a plug in adapter for the pick ups, but not the 4runner from 90-95. I called them and the guy i talked to said they don't make a 4runner set up and that i had to make it my self.

the 40050 is just a generic harness....its not plug and play. That website is wrong anyways. The 90-92.5 4runners used a rectangle 4 prong plug. The 92.5-95 4Runner uses a square 4 prong plug.
The 84-89 4Runners, and 84-00 Pickups and Tacomas (excluding t100's) use a rectangle 6 prong (one prong is emtpy tho) plug.
I once purchased a plug setup for my 1990 4Runner from Reese, so depending on which style taillight harness you hace, they may still be available if you talk to the right people.
