'89 pickup - 22RE - A43H
I have an '89 2wd pickup, 22re, A43H, bone stock.
I picked up a FSM on eBay, along with an owners manual.
According to the specs, the manual trans 22RE can pull up to 3500lbs. The auto trans is limited to 2000lbs.
I have a boat that weighs about 2800lbs, loaded and ready to launch.
If I put on an aftermarket transmission cooler, would I be OK pulling the boat about 50 miles, round trip? There are some hills and the launching ramp is pretty steep.

The 22re auto can also pull 3500 if it has the towing package according to the owners manual.
I dont think weight is much of an issue. For towing I only notice problems at high speeds and wind resistance.
I put an aftermarket cooler on, and already had a good hitch. There isnt much more to a towing package as far as I can tell.
Just turn off OD and use the ECT power button. You wont win any races.

Pulling isnt the issue stopping is. Keep that in mind. My father used an 88 4x4 to pull his 18 ft. bass boat. I am not sure how much it weighed but it had a 225 merc on the back of it. Pulling was never an issue but stopping was at times. Just keep that in mind. Good luck

For those that don't pull trailers, surge brakes are set up on the trailer itself. The tounge slides back and forth a bit intentionally. When it slides forward (when you step on the brakes in the tow vehicle) the movement activates a hydraulic master cylinder that applies the brakes on the trailer. The harder you brake, the more the trailer brakes get applied. This setup sounds hokey, but it works pretty well.
When backing up the trailer, it helps a lot to remember to lock out the surge brakes. Especially if you are backing the trailer up a hill. ;-)
