my 88 truck dies and/or sputters after the check engine light turns on. if it dies it's really hard to start and you have to pump the gas pedal to keep it running. it flashes cel codes 22 42 and 51. these problems all seem related to me. i think it could be a faulty gauge. i took it apart once and the cluster said 86 4 runner so it looks like its from a junk yard. the truck has always done this since i bought it like a year ago. anyone have an idea of whats wrong with it? i replaced the fuel filter because it was clogged, and the starter because i overused it trying to start it all the time.

Code 22 Water temperature sensor circuit fault
Code 42 Vehicle speed sensor circuit
Code 51 AC signal on; DL contact off (in trany shifter with diagnostic connector jumped)


I doubt those are related, make sure you don't have an air bubble in the coolant and that the radiator is full, it will run funny if the coolant level is low or if that sensor is bad. It is possible that a leak in the head gasket will cause an air bubble in the coolant system.

I have to assume here this is a 22re since you have not said.

FYI a bad gauge will not trip a cel. nor will it make the engine run funny.

its a 22re 5spd 4x4. so do you think i should replace the water temp. sensor?

i have checked the antifreeze because someone else told me that could be the problem to.
