88 Toyota 4x4 Looking to get better performance!!
I put a 2 1 /4 exhast I want to go know what I can do next since this did not appear to help much.
I need to know what to go to bring this engine (22RE) to life... looking for better performance and stronger engine. Without changing the crank or pistons what can I do to make this truck open up.
Should I port the head and shave? QWhat cam do you suggest to bring up max horse power to utilize the current lower end. I dont want to spend millions just bring it up another 50 hp.

You can get an engine builder rv head with over size valves and a cam for around 700 dollars, and with it and the exhaust that you have already done you will probably gain about 25 HP.

don't need to spend millions, as was implied above... but a turbocharger will not add ANYTHING to the bottom end as implied, and may even detract from bottom end power.
engnbldr offers a head, with a 268 or 271 cam, as myyota mentions above and will add noticible ponies. the 268 cam will work well with the stock exhaust, but a header (tri-y/ 4-2-1) is advised, the 271 cam will also work, but a header is advised, and some tweaking to the VAFM (not MAF as some like to call it) may be necessary.

it'd take some work, but a supra motor would bring you up to 236HP or so and close to that in torque. haven't done it myself, but from what i've read sems pretty straightforward. for the story www.intellivationdesign.com/4Runner/4Runner.htm and the bellhousing http://www.monster-performance.com/m...products_id=32

you won't find a turbo or supercharger kit that is street legal on a 22re.
swapping in a 22rte and it's electronics... you may be able to get it certified through the referee system in California though.
you may even be able to get a supercharger through the referee. but there are hoops to jump through and other requirements to pass.
it's not cheap, but you could get a 454 chevy in a toyota to pass with enough determination.
if you can get it through California, every other state would have to pass it.

head an cam wont cause to to fail visual theirs no way to tell, and it should pass the sniffer. an aftermarket header shouldn't fail you as long as it has provisions for for egr and o2 sensors, but if it dose not have an carb sticker a shop that is a real dickhead may fail you but its unlikely.
