88 pickup 3.0 liter overheat

Hey Guys,

I ve been having issues with my 88 3.0 overheating. A while back I noticed that I was going through some coolant but couldn't find a leak but did have the dreadful sweat smell coming out of my exhaust. I had my mechanic look at it and we had a small leak in the upper portion of the intake. We fixed it and replaced most of the coolant hoses. I don't drive the truck other than hunting and so it sat for a while. recently it has been running hot but only some times?!! The temp gauge will creep up to just below the red and then occasionally go back down to the middle. I'm not getting the sweet exhaust or smoke, but have noticed that I'm having to add coolant?! I have never seen any wet spots or external leaks anywhere. Also when driving on the highway at a constant speed it doesn't take long for the temp to get up there and stay up there just below the red line and when I stop and get out the engine is HOT! any suggestions on where to start? one other thing is that when I run the defrost the inside of the windshield will fog up? a friend said it could be the heater core? but I am getting heat out of the vents.

Sounds like a plugged up or leaky heater core. Since your getting heat and loosing coolant id say its leaking.

Yes, heater core probably leaking, but if your not seeing a leak anywhere you might check your carpet.
Also I would just do a block check for exhaust gases to be sure it's not a blown HG and pressure test cooling system.
It's possible coolant could be seeping out of weeper on water pump.
