88 pick up Clutch Issues V6 stand

88 Toyota pick up - V6 Engine

I dropped the transmission out of My Truck last night and put it back together and now the clutch doesn't seem to be working. I replaced the Master clutch cylinder, Slave cylinder, pilot bearing and release bearing (the previous owner put used bearings in when replacing the clutch with a brand new one).

My symptoms are
- When Truck is running in neutral, with the clutch pushed in, it will not go into any gear

- When trying to go into reverse, clutch in, truck running, it makes a weird grinding noise. but no forward gears make that noise.

- When starting the truck in gear it drives fine, stalls if you slam on the breaks (yay for new breaks) but if you push both the breaks and the clutch, it stops but will not stall.

I'm seriously confused on this one.

Crawl in the driver's side floorboard and check the pedal brackets for cracks.

He's talking about the bracket on the firewall. You'll need to push on it while looking to tell.

How used is the clutch that i'm assuming you put back in with a new throw out bearing and pilot bushing?. Sounds like basically what PO did.

the "old clutch" has under 2000 miles on it, basically screamed whenever you engaged it because of the Very used throw out bearing.

You're not getting enough disengagement. I believe there was a difference between 2wd and 4wd hydrolic parts for the clutch. There is a major known issue with the clutch pedal bracket inside the cab fatiguing and breaking.

Did you put the clutch plate in backwards? Obviously with the clutch worn, it will not show you which side is flywheel facing in writing. So, if you removed the clutch, and it got turned around before you put it back on, then this is your problem.

I was thinking he probably put the clutch disc in backwards too. Seems like that happens from time to time. I know there's a thread or two around...but it's not my problem.

It doesn't matter how worn the clutch is. You can still tell which side faces the flywheel.

Here's some photos to help show the "flatter" side and "spring sticking out" side. I was little confused during my first clutch change.

The raised spring sticking out side....toward the transmission

The flatter side....toward the flywheel

I would think if backwards it would not bolt up. But having never done that myself; I'm ignorant of it. I know its dished but not deep enough (I think)for that much metal.

Good pictures!
