88 4runner 4wd light not working?

My 4wd system functions fine but the 4wd cluster light does not come on? It used to work then just quit. I know it is not the bulb or the cluster cause I swapped in a SR5 cluster.

Where is the switch that turns that light on? Where can I trace the wiring to trouble shoot this? Should I take the transfer case shift boot off is there contacts in there?

HELP Please !

does your shift selector light work? I just replaced the bulb in my 92 SR5 and there is only one bulb for the whole selector.
On my truck the dimmer switch left of the steering wheel is for those lights, and the gauge cluster, climate controls.

Your first check should be the indicating bulb in the dash. Verify that it is okay, if it's not replace it and check it's function. Once you rule that out the 4wd switch is on the back of the transfer case. You need to check the switch itself, unplug the wires and check for continuity across the wires that go to the switch when the transfer case is in 4wd. Next if the switch is okay, check for 12 volts with the key on, at the other side of the plug.

The bulb is good. Soo I'll check the transfer case switch. You said it's on the back of the transfer case I am assuming it's underneath the truck, nothing on the inside?

It's actually near the top of the t-case, just below and behind where the shifter mounts to it. The switch could be faulty, or the wires have backed out/pulled free of the wiring connector/plug attached to it. That's been known to happen.

Is the rig equipped with ADD? When I bought my '90 V6 Runner the indicator light didn't work, though 4wd worked fine, and the plug and wires on the transfer case were secure and in good shape. Ended up there's a plug for it on the front diff also, and apparently both switches needed to indicate that it's in 4wd for my light to work. Just a thought, hope it's an easy fix either way.

Ah, didn't know when ADD was introduced. Had heard somewhere that it was a V6 thing, and V6's were introduced in '88, so...I was wrong!
