88 4Runner 1kd-ftv swap (NEW) w/pics

lets try this again

Yep i am back at it. Recently a routine head gasket maintenance on my 3.slo yielded unwanted findings. Cylinder walls scored badly, and pitted pistons.
I am not satisfied i have done all my research to convert this truck to a diesel, the demise of my v6 is untimely.

The 1KD-FTV engine is my mill of choice with its improved mpg and power, however there have been more 1kz-te swaps in these 1stGen Runners then the preferred 1KD-FTV. I know the 1kd has much ore electronic, but i am ok with that.

so here are some questions i still have if you have any information on the below questions please speak up. I'd be interested in getting intouch with a knowledgeable Hino mechanic since they sell this engine in medium truck duty form, Hino Dyna 300(i think).

Have you any experience with installing a 1kd-ftv into an 86-95 Toyota 4Runner/Pickup? Pitfalls?
Parts, i have heard and read that my local Toyota dealer can get parts?
What should i pay for a halfcut?
Do i need the transmission? I have an r150 and want to stay manual, i read that the bell housing should work?
Does the ecu stand alone, or does it need a transmission ecu to operate, therefore i need a 5spd halfcut?
Are there vehicles that are preferred as a halfcut over others? Hiace, Hilux, Vigo, Prado, LandCruiser? Chassis numbers?
FSM for a 1kd-ftv or 1kz-te?
Oil pan and sump swapable to clear the steering linkage?

OK fellow yotatechers...i need some help

I need a chassis code for a LHD 4x4 Hilux or Surf/4Runner in the 2002-2009 range that has the 1KD-FTV engine. I need this number to source the correct half-cut so if i need the gauges and/or dash, i will be grafting from the donor to the 88.
It seems Toyota started changing chassis codes depending on what lump was under the hood/bonnet.

Spoke with Winch today. He put a 1kd-ftv into a sas'd taco, and he seems to think this transplant is doable. Thanks winch for answering my questions.

I am interersted on how the whole tranny thing will work. I hope you can run your "r' series tranny, but you may need that inculuded in your half cut too. Hopefully the engine is a stand alone harness with no input from the tranny.

Depending on how this goes, I can see a project for myself in the future. I drove a 70 series landcruiser (Prado) in Belize a few years ago with this engine. It was pure bliss. I just can't figure out why Toyota would not make it available for the US market.

The r series Trans will work with r151 bell housing and input shaft. I plan on getting the Trans with the delivery.

If it works with the r-trans what about the starter? It's on the opposite side. I guess you used the backing plate from the r-series too?

Actually, one could use the bell housing from the r151. This is a new version of the r151 with the starter on the opposite side as our older rigs.

Anyone know if Toyota changed the design of their solid front axle found on the Hilux after 1985? Evidently the Solid Front Axle lived under the Hilux till 1997. And if i am going to order an engine and trans, i might as well add a newer SFA.

Some info i found

1KZ into an 85 Hilux, with IFS(yep, the owner didn't like the SFA so he put the 88 IFS in)
http://www.toyotadiesel.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=5984

1KZ and 1KD share the same block configuration, it is said that the 1kd is an evolution of the 1KZ. Which should mean that the 1kd will fit since the 1kz-t was offered in the older 80's style chassis. Issue is the intercooler on top of the valve cover adds 40mm(1-5/8") another good reason i have a 2" BL.

Parts, i have heard and read that my local Toyota dealer can get parts?
Yes, however there seems to be a few parts for a 1KD that may need to be sourced, but i don't have anything definitive.

Do i need the transmission? I have an r150 and want to stay manual, i read that the bell housing should work? Answered above

FSM for a 1kd-ftv or 1kz-te? Found the electrical and a link above in my original post is linked to an online FSM
Oil pan and sump swapable to clear the steering linkage? Swappable with 1KZ which seems to fit in the older chassis

And a few pics for you all:
yes it is a diesel with DOHC

Guess what engine is in this beast...good enough for the arctic, good enough for me

why yes. yes it is.

so you're gonna keep the intercooler like that? are you going to put a scoop on or something for ventilation? just curious.
