87 runner really bad smell
ok i have this truck had for a wile and i did the clock spring mod (make the ecu think its get less air for it to run leaner more mpg's) and it went from 11 to 17mpg but anyways, i replaced the exhaust from the were the cat was to the bumper and now it dont smell in side anymore UNLESS the rear window is down and it makes it so bad to drive that you al most pass out! but door windows down rear window up not to bad rear window down and your high as a kite and anyone behind me driveing as well need big time help on what this could be please
heres what im thinking everyone
blocked egr valve?
bad plugs?
bad o2
heres the specs
22re, 5-speed, ac, new air filter and muffler, does not burn oil or coolant or power steering fluid, no smoke, smelled bad before and after the new muffler i dont get it has good compression all 4 idles even and runs and drives fine (when warm ok when cold) dont get it has 200k or so miles

Although I don't have any idea what the smell could be I can tell you for a fact that you cannot run with the back window open at all on a first gen runner. You'll be pulling exhaust inside the entire time you're moving. The fix for that is to install a factory rear spoiler off of a newer model runner or just leave the window up.

sorry, had to completely revise my comment after reading you have no cat.
the purpose of the cat is to convert sulfur additives in unleaded fuel to hydrogen dioxide. when you smell "rotten eggs", that is the unconverted sulfur. THIS IS CAUSED BY A RICH A/F RATIO. too much unburnt fuel getting thru to the exhaust, and the sulfur accumulates in a cat. a temporary cause can also be gas with more of a particular additive. change gas stations and see if it clears up.
but if you have NO cat, you're smelling the sulfur that isn't being converted. if you didn't smell it before with the window down, you probably have a new rich condition. change air filter, plugs, possibly 02 sens or fuel pressure regulator. OR ADD A CAT.
HOWEVER, if you're concerned about the smell COMING INSIDE THE CAB, it's because the backdraft will pull exhaust in through the rear window. the carbon monoxide will make you feel dizzy if not knock you unconscious.
THE REMEDY FOR THIS is to make sure your tailpipe bends to the left right behind the rear wheel, and the tip sticks out past the body just a little bit. this will allow the sidedraft to carry the exhaust away. i added a tip on mine to rectify this, because i have the softop and had the same issue. now i don't have a problem with backdraft. also, as J88 said, the rear wind deflector from a '90-95 will create a down draft which helps keep your back window clear, and deflects the backdraft some as well. good luck.

yeah but it just kinda started to do this though and i leaned it out some i went from 11 mpg to 17 mpg and the wing i might have to try that one out as my exhaust does go to the drivers side after the rear tyre so i dont get it and theres more holes in the body then a cheese grater anyways lol
