87 fuel injectors on a 1990 22re

OK, so my genius might have reached an all-time high here.

Last week I sent in a set of 22re injectors to WitchHunter for a rebuild. Since I didn't want to have my truck be non-functional while they were out, I sent in the ones off an 87 parts rig that my buddy has.

When they came back, I discovered that the plugs weren't exactly the same. No worries, bust out the Dremel tool and trim the plug till it fits.

Cut to yesterday. I'm driving along and suddenly the motor dies and will not restart.

After it cooled it would catch for a second on starting, but would not keep running.

I have fuel pressure and spark.

Now, after doing a little research this morning I've discovered that in addition to having a different plug style, the older injectors are a different resistance. In fact, they require an injector resistor that doesn't exist on my 90.

So my question is: Assuming that the problem comes from having the incorrect resistance in the 87 injectors, what did I burn out?

Possibly the ECU.

I'm thinking so. I'll grab the 87 ecu this morning and plug it in, see if that does it.

I wonder if I can wire in the 87 resistor...?

You might have fried the system, different connectors and completely different ohm rating. I would send the 90 plugs in and have them rebuild before you damn the system permentantly. Plus the 80's ecu is way different then the 90's ones. Best of luck man

I reckon you're right. I'm going to try to track down an ECU and pop the old injectors back in there.

running an 87 ecu on the 90 with the 87 injectors isn't gonna work either, the AFM and everything else is different as well.

Use this to cross reference which one will work on your truck.

Thanks xxxtreme, that's a big help!

I ordered a replacement from the correct year range off eBay tonight, should be here by Wednesday. Meanwhile I'll work on getting my old injectors back in, and we should be back in business.

Getting somewhat tired of working on it, and I just looked at a gorgeous 2000 Tacoma 3.4 TRD...maybe in the spring I'll upgrade. I just got this thing set up the way I want it, so it'd be dumb to part with it now. But having something that's turnkey most of the time would be nice.
