87 22re 5-spd Throw Out Bearing Hunt
Hey guys
1987 Toyota 4Runner 22re 5-Spd
I am putting a new engine in and while having the eng/tran split I wanted to replace the pilot bearing and the throw out bearing. The pilot was straight forward. The throw out is throwing me for a loop. I removed and spring clip and the bearing/hub assembly slide right off. It definitely seemed like two separate parts mated. I went to the big box, Autozone, and they sold me this bearing. I took the assembly and the new bearing to the press shop and they said it was the wrong thing. So then, what is the part that I do need? Should the carrier have been split and replaced or is the whole thing replaced? Any help is appreciated.

carrier is not replaced. You are right it's two pieces. I got told the same thing from pep boys when I took it to them to have pressed on. As long as the inside diameter is correct on the throwout it is the right one. On Some manufactures (like my Perfection clutch kit from Advance Auto Parts) the throwouts have different outside diameters. You should be good with a bigger one just not a smaller one. Also make sure you grease the heck out of it when putting it back onto the input shaft.

so what I am coming across is that the bearing I should use is for the 224mm clutch. Was this the carrier/bearing set up for the turbo 22re's opposed to the other flat top bearing with a smaller I.D.? I have a non-turbo motor, but am the owner down the line. I can check against the VIN, yeah?
