87 22re 4x4 engine rebuild

Hey guys,
So I'm thinking of rebuilding my 22re myself and just having the block and head bored at the machine shop.

I'm pretty knowledgeable with mechanics ive done valves and headgaskets on severeal different engines but never a bottom end.

Im looking for tips or anyinfo that will help my journey. Also im want more horsepower and torque something like the 4000 dollar engines you see online i figured if i do it myself i can afford more expensive parts along the way.

Use good parts, check clearances as you go, follow the service manual engine rebuild procedures and I think you should be good. Especially if it was running to start with. If it was a basket case, a lot closer inspection of any parts you plan to reuse would be the plan. Get it balanced if you can. If not, take measurements of weight of each piston/pin/rod/ring set and try to equalize them. Backyard blueprinting, measure measure measure, write all down.

I plan on ordering a fsm, the truck runs but i think the wrists pins are going bad it has a real loud tapping noise in the bottom end. This will be a long process due to working 10 hour days 5 days a week and having 2 kids under 6 years old but i will update with photos as i go along.
