87 22r sputterin out at high rpms

Hello all I have been living with this issue for a few years now. My stock carb on my 22r sputters out at higher rpm. The easiest way I can think to explain it is going WOT in 1st gear will make the truck cut out eisier than 5th gear WOT running down the road. My old carb didn't do this but had issues that were beyond repair this issue only arrived with the new to me carb that has been rebuilt. I thought maybe a fueling issue but have made it act up shut the truck off and the site glass is still at half way. Timing appears to advance as it should. So that is where I am at and not sure what steps to take further.

Red face

No Tach so you can`t tell us the RPM??

I doubt my last 22R saw over 3000 rpm

You might be at the limit of what this Carb can do.

Are we dealing with a fresh rebuild of the engine??

Youare not dealing with a Power House at about 120 Horse Power fresh

It has been years since I thought about tuning Carbs

It has to be past 4k rpm for it to do it and the engine has about 20k miles on it.

Just a update I fixed several vacuum leaks and now rpm has no effect. At WOT the truck completely cuts out. If I let off a little the truck will take off. Possible jetting issue?

No; I suspect too much air and no fuel flow. I think one of the air bleeds is plugged. At WOT you have no manifold pressure to work with. Now at 4k rpm you could really be floating the valves. The springs could old high mileage pieces that look good but are junk. That would absolutely kill airflow and fuel with it. Next; and I see it alot, your cam is shot. Modern oils simply do not lubricate solid lifter cams, so you have only nominal lift because the bumps are really flat and not mountains. You could pop the cover and look, if you see any grooves, its junk.

I suggest a throttle stop as the cheap way out. Not right; it just makes what you have work.
