86 SR5 Ext Cab with 22RTEC
Just thought I'd share today's find... Picked this baby up for $400 so I can put the motor in my 1st gen build... Going to take the entire wiring harness and dash and adapt it to my 79 Limited Edition cab and then part out the leftovers.
It was in a collision and the guy just wanted it gone. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1757.JPG Will probably adapt the bed for my 80 frame as well. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1753.JPG I'm curious what tranny this is... should be top shift since its bucket seats. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1756.JPG The motor looks overall clean.... radiator is obviously toast. The guy said when the flatbed dropped it off he fired it up and drove up his driveway which was about 15 feet long... hopefully the radiator is the only damage. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1758.JPG The seats are gorgeous... more comfortable than my Wolfsburg Edition Jetta's. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1759.JPG :banger: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1777.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1760.JPG 168k miles http://lh5.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1763.JPG |
tranny in the 4x4 turbos is a r151f, and most people say the identifiing factor is the rubber plug in the bottom of the tranny which i see in the pic, so this is prolly a 2wd version of the r151f
|
So, do you know if its possible to mate the 2WD R151F to a 4x4 TC?
If not I'll have to pick up a W56. |

What a nice find.
As it's a 2wd you will have two issues. Since it's a 2wd, it has the wrong rear housing to bolt a transfercase to it. You would have to chase down a R151 4wd rear transmission housing and coupling. Internally though they're identical. R151 transfercase has a 23 spline input vs the normal 21 spline input. You'd need to find a R151 transfercase, or swap a 23 spline input into a normal gear driven case. Your best bet if you never plan on dual cases? Use the R151 Bellhousing and the R150 transmission/transfer case found on the V6 trucks. As a sidenote, the R151 bellhousing is worth about 200 dollars as it matches bolt pattens on multiple toyota engines/transmissions. |
Oh, and R151's are all foward shifts when 4wd, not that you can't change that though.
|
sorry, not a R151f... it's a R150... non granny gear tranny...

Here's a couple attempts: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1784.JPG http://lh6.ggpht.com/_MOMl90sLmcs/S3...0/IMG_1785.JPG |
Well the tag does indeed say R150.
Still a R151 bellhousing though. |
My friend... An R series tranny is an R series tranny... All you need to for it to be the same exact thing as a R151... is the 1st, 2nd and IIRC, 3rd gear... which Marlin is rumored to sell.
2nd would be a 23 spline rear half of the tranny and TC to be a f. just like a R150 has a chain drive case, that might be your cheapest and best option to make it a 4WD tranny. Forget the granny gear though, sorry. Unless you have money to burn... |

Sorry, I had to... I love that smiley... :D |
well, I'm not too inclined to spend major dough just to get the crawler tranny... It just would have been nice if it was a easy bonus deal.
I'll probably just go with a W56 tranny and use the top shift transfercase on the back of the L43 transmission on my 1980. Question #2... Wouldn't this truck have the wider rear end than mine, seeing as its an IFS? Just not sure the difference between a 4WD rear straight axle and a 2WD rear axle. I read that the third member in the turbo models was tougher. Not that I could use that, I have the stock 4.37's in my diffs. |
Are you interested in selling the door pannels and window switches?

I plan to use the seats and the dash/center console. The headliner is flawless... such a waste. Part of me wonders how hard it would be to chop the nose off this cab and graft my 79 cab from the windshield forward to this thing. Hardest part would be transitioning the lines of the fenders and the hood. Doubt its possible without some major fiberglass work. |
What do you feel is a fair price for the pannels. I can fix the contacts in the switch so im not to concerened about that. If your not comfortable shipping thats cool to. Either way good luck on your build, I cant believe you got that truck for $400, what a deal
