86 4 cyl AT 4.30 and 33X12.50 good or bad?

I'm building my 4th runner, but this is my 1st auto. I've run 33s with stock 4.10s and a five speed, but 0 experience with 4.30s and an auto. Are the two similar?, or will the auto be way under powered? Love to hear any input. New here, but have lots of experience to share.

That would be bad. The auto has a ridiculously tall OD. It's .71:1 where the 5 speed is .85:1.

The auto needs 4.88's to run 31's, 5.29's for 32's. and 5.71's for 33's.

I guess if you just accept you'll never use OD and don't drive too fast you could get away with this on the auto but I would not recommended it. It would suggest regearing it correctly.

that would be bad.

4.30's and 33's would be worthless with a five-speed. Forget it with an automatic.

I had an 87 Runner with 22RE and auto...I chose 33x10.50 tires and 571 gears....worked nice. If I were to do it again I would still do the same combo. Talk about get up and go. Offroad, I never ran out of torque in low range :)
On the highway, it was a little revvy for some....75 real mph at 3400 rpm.

If you stick with the 430 gears then consider 33x10.50 tires....it will have better acceleration and steering response will be better.

When I ran 33's with my auto tranny and 4:30's my trans temp light would always come on.

HAHAHA, sucked all the way, thats why my runner is getting a 3.4 swap, my 87 runner has the same combo and you would have to run it in third gear and drop back to second on flat ground to try to get back to 65 for a while, couldnt put it in 4th gear, it would buck and hop, couldnt go wheeling up any kind of grade, first gear pinned till the tranny temp light goes on and watch every body else drive past you, yeah fun times. I would never do that ever again. The 3.4 with the auto and 4.56's in my pickup are awesome, same hills the runner wouldnt touch in first gear, the truck goes up them at 55 mph in third gear with no problems, wheels great, gets 21 mpg on freeway at 70 mph. Also some help, under the hood of my runner is a stock sticker saying it had 14 inch rims with 27 inch tires, to give you an idea of what toyota intended the truck to have on it to work with that ratio and power range, I bet it went fast with that combo on it. And yes, the 22re was newer and ran great, not a mechanical problem with the truck, a power output that was not possible from the little 4 cylinder problem. I talked to some people with the same combo that stuffed 5.29's in their axles and said they wanted to go lower because it still wasnt enough.

Gears

I have 4.88's with the A340, wish I would have installed 5.29's.
