86 22r over heating
i have an 86 toyota 4x4, 22r bored 30 over, topline head, and thats it for the motor. its only got about 3000 miles on a rebuild. all at once, one day i drove it and it over heated. it just kept blowin water out of the overflow, so i put a new thermostat in it cause i checked the old one and it was stuck open, i replaced the radiator cap, and replaced the fan clutch. it didnt help...i had the head presure checked and resurfaced, ive put all new gaskets on it. no water in the oil. no leaking anywhere exept out of the overflow but only when it starts to get hot. it runs good, its not missing. its gettin good compression, and its still overheating. ive tryed everything i know to do... this is the first time i couldnt figure a toyota out... i just cant figure this one out... any help???

is the t-stat installed properly? they have an offset to them and will hit the head and not open all the way if installed wrong. figured it was worth asking just in case you hadnt thought of it. to you it may be a DUH!!! type question, but it sent me on a wild goose chase on my 86.

yea thats what we thought too, so we had it pumped or something... i dont know what u call it. no air pocket, and still no help well now what its doing is when im going down the highway it overheats "55 miles per hour", and when out in the woods climbing hills it wont overheat the first time.

Head gasket. Mine did the same thing. You have a leak in the head gasket probably on the exhaust side. It pushes pressure into the block causing the coolant to have to find a place to go - your overflow tank. Nothing to do with the t-stat. Air pocket - yep, a big one. Spend the $ and get a good gasket and new head bolts, LC Engineering has quality gaskets. Happy wrenching.

ive replaced the head gasket twice, the first time i forgot to clean out the head bolt holes and it didnt seal all the way, and the second time, i bought a good $100 head gasket and sprayed some high $ toyota head gasket sealent spray, "had copper flakes in it i think". the spray was made special for toyota heads. i even put high $ intake and exoust gastets on. we did a radiator pressure test and it looked good. the head has been resurfaced, pressure checked, and cleaned. its an aftermarket "top line" head so i still dont know...
