8000km towing 2000lbs - 4runner rear coil/shock question
Hey guys,
I've been hunting around threads for hours trying to figure out which rear coil option is right for my '93 4runner. I'm moving in a few months and plan on having the rig loaded down and towing a 2000lb trailer at the same time. I've already got the trans cooler on order, don't worry! I currently have some urethane spring helpers jammed in the rear coils to level the truck off and it's worked out great (especially for the 20$ it cost) but I realize this probably isn't a good idea if i'm going to be towing. I've talked to trdparts4u.com about OME 901hd's and they highly recommend swapping out the stock shocks. I know this is probably a good idea for the long run but the funds situation is in bad shape. If I go with the OME's do I absolutely have to get new shocks? I'm not worried about wheel travel/flex right now, I just want to be able to safely haul all my junk 8000km! Has anyone tried the OME coils with stock shocks? thanks for the help!

Yes I have and the stock shocks are too short. when you drop the axle off a curb or in a larger pothole the shock is fully extended & doesn't have time to slow the axle drop down. Thi shten causes a thud on the upper shock mount, enough of this & it will cause damage. I have seen shock mount break off on GMC trucks because of this.
Here is what I am doing:
original monroe shocks (sensitrac) part number is 37033. Specs are compressed = 13.250", extended = 20.875" travel = 7.625"
Monroe Gasmatic plus = compressed = 14.75", extended = 22.25, travel = 8.625, part number 32369. Canadian tire would need to order it in from the US, cost is 26.84 each and 6 days shipping. Cnd tire has 1/2 price on the second shock right now. I am odrering these babies up today. The OME shocks are $65/each US plus shipping.
The Gasmatic plus is a softer shock, not a heavey duty, but I want a soft suspension in the bush I think. You can also reference the numbers to a firmer one as well.
The sale ends today.
Given that you will have the back end loaded down probably dropped about 1" with the weight (if that) then you might be OK but the OME springs do not compress as much with weight as the stock ones do. I would be safe & replace the shocks.

Thanks celica,
That was exactly the info I was looking for! I'd also prefer a softer shock if I could get one. I had alot of problems snapping off the mounting rings on the '84 I used to have. The shocks that came on it were far too heavy for the truck and the mounts would snap off any time i hit something with a bit of momentum. appreciate the help!

Following the $$$ to Edmonton! I'll probalby be in Calgary quite a bit, lots of friends and family there too. My dad owns a parts store that deals monroe so I'll probably try and get the shocks there. I'll check into some other shock options with the compressed/extended and travel measurements too, just in case something else catches my eye. Unfortunately I can't get the OME gear through our shop, I'm on my own for that.
