Exclamation 5W-30 To 10W-30 Causeing My Ticking?

Ok,

Hears the deal, when i got my timing chain done, we changed the oil.
The 4Runner as far as i know, was alway's using 5W-30 oil. When we used
10W-30 instead .... the engine get's louder after it warms up. You can't hear it when it's cold but when she warms up she get's that diesil like sound to her and it's only realy when it's idleling or at very low speeds....

There are no issues with the engine/valves/etc as far as i know.

Do you think if i change back to the 5W-30 "non-syn" oil the sound will go away??

Has anyone had a simalar experiance????

usually the heavier the oil, the less noise the valvetrain will make. unscrupulous used car dealers have been known to put heavy weight oils in to hide top end noises on used cars they have for sale.

Ok, in the morning, i'm changing the oil, and going back to 5w-30 to see if my engine get's quieter....

Any advice on adding a bit of tranny fluid to the oil??? how much would i have to add?

I just bought a 1995 3.0 v6 and had a ticking when just starting. The previous owner used napa filters. I have always heard to use toyota brand filters. I changed oil with gtx high mileage 10w30 and toyota filters and ticking went away at startup.

There is NO DIFFERENCE between 5w30 and 10w30 once the engine is warmed up. They are both a 30 weight oil at operating temperature, and 5 or 10 weight oil at room temperature. That is the only difference.

If I remember correctly, you posted a video of your engine so people could try and diagnose it. The noise your engine is making would definitly not be caused by a slight change in oil viscosity. It sounds to me like your valve adjustment was done incorrectly. My truck sounded just like yours the first time I did a valve adjustment. I did 2 other valve adjustments after, and I got it to quiet down a litte, but I eventually took it to the mechanic and he adjusted them correctly. I did the procedure correctly, but I am just not real good with the feeler gauges, yet.

New timing chain? I'd say valve adjustment, too. Someone posted in another thread that valves rattling after warm up meant they were too loose.
