5speed pops out of gear HELP

I have a 1992 22RE 5speed and 2nd and 3rd grear are tough to get into or grind and pop out of gear all the time now I have checked to make sure the fluid level is good and I cant see anything visually wrong I am assuming the worst that the syncros are shot and iam going to have to have the transmission rebuilt but what I dont understand is that it happened overnight. Any ideas HELP!

I think these were some of the symptoms that some have experienced with a damaged/degraded shifter seat bushing. Do some searching for that. It is a very easy and inexpensive maintenance thing to do which may cure the problem or at least rule it out.

it could be a bad clutch

Check your throw out bearing.

bflooks 12-05-2005 01:02 PM

this is the exact same thing i am experiencing. hence my post for taking off the grips on the shifters. lol!

marlin crawler has the kit (poly) for about $16 plus shipping. this is the seat and the cap for the end of the shifter. i called toyota today, and they want $14 just for the seat!

Try the shifter bushing and seat first. It made a big difference on my trans.

Yea, my truck sometimes pops itself out of third just going down the street

Flamedx4 12-06-2005 10:23 AM

Shifter seat and bushing is the likely cause.
and no, the clutch can't cause that. :pat:

bflooks 12-06-2005 10:26 AM

funny 3rd should be mentioned here.

my truck has 150k on it now. and just the beginning of last week, it became hard to put into 3rd and 4th. sometimes it would go in, others only half way. sometimes it grinds on the way in and others not. well, now...it ramdomly pops itself out of 3rd at low rpms. the bushing and seat are already on their way from marlin. will put them in on friday.

just odd how i was stressing out about it, and then the resolution was brought up right before my eyes. LOL!

It Worked !!!!!!!!!!!

:great: I took the shift lever out and what I found was a seat bushing that was gone! I cleaned everything and put the new bushings in and reassembled everything I then set out to try it out and Amazing! it worked. I had asked a mechanic at the Toyota dealership and he said that the shift fork bearings were gone and the whole transmission would have to be rebuilt about 1400.00 worth well it shows you that not even a mechanic knows everything
Again thanks to all that gave input on this topic and may the force of YotaTech be with you all.......................................
:D

squirt a bunch of Lucas in there. :great:
that's our "temporary, I don't wanna know or worry about it for a month or two" fix with me and my friends.

yotaforce...how hard was the retaining cover to get out of yours? the spring loaded one. i can only get mine to drop about 1/8th of an inch, and it won't really budge. any secrets to holding it down with another tool other than the thumbs? probably doesn't help that i was doing it in 6 degree weather, but still...what a pita!

Flamedx4 12-15-2005 02:03 PM

yotaforce - those bearings might *be* going out - doesn't mean they aren't gonna last another 10 years before they fail though...

bflooks - I used a largish pair of needle nose instead of thumbs. A proper command of profanity, as in most mechanic jobs, is essential.

Scofco 12-15-2005 02:14 PM

Mine does the same thing, for anyone that still needs help with theirs.
I have Amsoil Synthetic gear oil, brand new bushing and seat, and my throwout bearing is gone.
I haven't diagnosed mine farther than that.

yotaforce 12-17-2005 05:16 PM

That spring loaded retainer !!!!!!!!!!

Yes it took a little bit of persuasion to get that sucker out one thing I figured out was in the other posts on this repair they told you to turn it clock wise but you really need to push down about a 1/4 inch and turn it counter clockwise. I used an adjustable wrench with rubber-coated handles to push down on it due to the fact that I have a three-inch body lift. I tell you what! It sure made a huge difference no more grinding, no more popping out of gear and it shifts really smooth now.

I had the same problems with my 93 toyota popping out of gear and then finally would not go into 3rd or 4th. every told me i needed a tranny rebuid. i found this website and finished repairs today in approx 20 minutes and 32 bucks in parts. heres a great link with photos and step by step instructions for the repair. parts can be obtained fro toyota dealer. heres the link:
