I bought my truck with 5.29 gears and 265/75/16 tires which roughly equal to 32". Its a 1988 runner with auto tranny. Are there any serious negative consequences for running 32s instead of 35's besides the speedo error and MPG/RPM? I'm thinking about replacing the tires soon but don't want to go 35's unless I have to. Cant even really get 35's with 16" wheels unless i go 315/75/16 which will be close to 35" but will create other problems that I dont want to deal with. Thanks,

what kind of rpm's are you running at around 60mph?


it doesn't really matter what you have as long as your OK with it.

your fine with the 22re 5.29's and the automatic and 32's.....

I'd step up to 255/85/16's next. I'm running them with 5.29's and a 5speed and have no complaints.

Seriously the od in your transmission is horrible and your truck is probably loving the gearing.

I'm planning on going 315/75/16's next

You are right about the truck loving the gearing. I drove a friends 87 5 speed on stock tires and my truck felt faster but it's probably not. Maybe we should have a friendly race to see whose faster. The RPM is little over 3K at 65 MPH. I'll probably get 285/75/16s for my next set.

there is a good chance those gears could cause the truck to explode.

Running those gears with 31's and an auto. Works great! True, our auto trannys run a TALL overdrive. Love the gearing.

i would leave your gearing. this way, 1 you save money by not replacing it, and 2 your thats much better off if in the future you do decide to go bigger.

I'm running that combo right now, my tires were 33's but now that they are almost worn out they are about 32s. With a 22re auto tranny that should be a good combo.

I just ordered my 5:29 gears for my truck, im running 33's. I know the over drive gear is tall, would the gears help the tanny with power? Im going to be driving it short distances to work no freeway, will gas milage be better with more power?

My gas mileage fell off a bit around town, about 2 mpg. I'm running steel wheels and 33x10.5 BFG's. They weight 27 lbs more than the stock wheels/tires I took off. Also, I have an ARB Bull bar and winch, so more weight.

But it picks up and goes a heck of a lot better than it did with the stock gearing and tires.

I was running the same tires and gears (but with the 3.0) and it worked ok... Mpg dropped to about 11mpg around the city. I switched to 4.56s and have been very happy with it. It's not a wheeler the low gears were not important as mpg to me. If you plan on wheeling it at all and can live with a drop in mpg then you'll love it.
