4Runner Windshield Wiper Question
Hey everyone I have a question about my 1987 4runner. It is an sr5 with power everything and when you press the washer fluid spray button, the wipers do not turn on. The sprayer works fine but I could have sworn that when I first bought my 4runner the wipers turned on when the spray button was pressed. I switched out the pump because the old one did not work with a pickup pump but I think the pumps are the same and are not related to the wipers.
My question is do your windshield wipers turn on when you press the spray button? Thanks, Chris |

You must have the fancy intermittent wipers. :D I should up grade mine! :wrench:
The base model version only squirts the washer fluid when you press the button. Then you have to push the stalk up to get the wipers to move. Or at least mine works like that. It sure beats having to dump a bucket of water on the windshield and moving each wiper arm individually with a handle. :) :safari: |

Yes, the wipers come on.

Hmm ok thanks for the replies. Is there any way to make the wipers come on? I'll see if there is anything in the FSM.
|
One way is to just turn them on as you push the fluid washer..
|
interesting

Haha @dropzone that's what I do! I just want them to come on automatically. Call me picky haha

So on the second gen, probably a totally different system, but a quick press will just spray, and a long press willl spray + wipe. |
Either the 1987 has a different control system from the 1986 OR there's something wrong with the controls...
My 1986 basic, stripped-down DLX sprays then wipes. |
My 1989 DLX has the "fancier" wiper module (variable, intermittent)
Its NEVER done a "wipe" when the button is pressed (I bought the truck new in 1989) I've just gotten into the habit of clicking the stalk to get it to wipe. |

My 1986 basic, stripped-down DLX sprays then wipes. I bet the difference between these two setups is the wiper time delay control box. The basic wiper setup does not have this box. I would assume 84 yota dude probably has the same wiper system as you, being that he has power everything, but you never know. I seem to remember Terrys87 had a post in one of his threads about the wiper control box. Found it: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post52203180 It is hard to read the wiring diagram in my Factory Service Manual. :safari: |

Maybe RAD4Runner installed a mod none of us know about...
Oh... 1987 Pickup 2WD carbureted 22R; A43D Automatic Transmission Could very well be that you have the most basic one; basicER than on a DLX. Either live with what you have or find similar wiper control module / system as 1986DLX and rewire if necessary. |
it isn't merely related to having variable-delay intermittent wipers. my '87 has variable intermittent wipers, low, high. no mist position, and no wiper action with the wash button pressed.
|
OK, of the people who have intermittent wipers:
No wiper when washer button is pressed:
I know my system is the most basic version so I wouldn't expect mine to wash and wipe with one button. :safari: |
Wow didn't know so many people would be talking about this! Haha I brought it up in the first place because it is annoying to have to move the lever down when you use the spray.
@Rad4runner thanks for the vid, that's exactly what I am talking about. I will look at mine and take some pics and play with it. I have the intermittent wiper control btw. Anyways here is what the FSM says. Anyone know where this switch it? Behind the steering wheel? Also FYI this is a 1988 FSM but I believe the info can't change that much through the years. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.yot...904304d124.png |
88 SR5. Wipers do not come on. IDK, I just always figured it was a little too old for that fancy stuff. I do have the intermittent wipers.
|
I'm in the same boat as Rad. 1986 DLX package with intermittent wipers that turn on and wipe for a few seconds when I hit the washer.
