4Runner, Pickup, Pop Up Sunroof What year fits what?

This is my first ever post in ANY forum. I know enough to know that people in forums get their panties in a bunch when someone posts something that has already been covered in multiple threads. Im not sure if itís just due to my lack of forum and/or search engine experience, but I am having a hell of a time finding verifiable information concerning factory pop up sunroofs. To the actual question.... what sunroof fits in what model and year? Iíve come to the conclusion that no actual list exists on earth. I have a 87 4Runner body on my 88 frame, that has a pop up sunroof. I set out to restore the frame for my sunroof. I spent two weeks sanding, painting, etc said sunroof frame. While spreading sealent to reseal weatherstripping around glass the glass was sitting to close to the propane heater and shattered. I have spent countless hours trying to get information on what sunroof I can use for a replacement. I have an extended cab 91 pop up sunroof on hold at the local wrecking yard to be picked up in a few days. The overall dimensions seem to coincide with what I need but??? Does anyone have the pop up sunroof fitment info for 84 to 95.5 4runners and pickups? Thanks

Welcome to YotaTech!

I am not sure exactly what fits, but according to Toyota, 1984-1988 Trucks and 1984-1989 4Runners all used the same factory moon roof / sun roof. The 1989-1995 Trucks and 1990-1995 4Runners use a different part, but I am not sure how different.

I found that information by looking up a 1987 4Runner. Look under the "What This Fits" tab. https://parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_19...320189104.html

Just be aware that some Trucks and 4Runners may have had the moon roof / sun roof installed at the port with a non-factory assembly.

One of the confusing aspects is the varied information Iíve received from so many sources. Iíve heard there was two different factory sizes, both looking the same but dimensionally different. Iíve also heard this isnít true. Iíve heard standard cabs to 95.5 pop tops will fit, Iíve heard extended cab pop tops will fit to 95.5, Iíve even read that up to 05 pop tops will fit. I know for a fact there was some changes in the 89 and up truck pop tops. One being the addition of the removable sun shade. This could be the reason for part number changes. There is a guy in California I talked to that has a first gen runner that swears up and down he got a pop top with sun shade from a 93 extended cab and it fit perfectly. If the glass is the same size on the 3rd gen trucks but the frame doesnít attach correctly I could use the original frame that I have and glue the glass in. I will keep you posted when I pick up the 91 glass Monday. Super curious if it will work. Especially since junkyards want 350 for a pop top directly out of a first gen runner but only 165 for one out of a 89 to 95 truck.

Update

I picked up a pop up sunroof from a 91 xtra cab yesterday. The glass and mounting hardware is exactly the same. The glass is the exact same size as well. The frame is a tad bit different but appears to be just cosmetic changes. This would explain the different part numbers between the first gen 4runners and the 89-95 pick ups. A velvet like strip was added to protect the paint on the cab. The window area inside the frame is a tiny bit smaller but youíd never notice. I picked up the sunroof for $165 at a local yard. The local Toyota only yards wanted $350 for a sunroof directly from a 1st gen 4Runner. I highly recommend replacing you broken sunroof with one from a newer Toyota pick up. Little to no rust, cheaper, and WAY easier to find. I will add pictures tonight.

Thanks for sharing what you found!

I suspected the differences were minor, but without having both sunroofs at my disposal to compare, I couldn't be sure.
