TORTIS 11-03-2007 02:53 PM

it happens only in 4WD?

wncmtnrunner 11-04-2007 11:21 AM

yeah only when its in 4wheel and in hi it does a more repetative sound than in lo but it drives fine please help

typical8o8 11-04-2007 01:21 PM

do you have manual locking hubs?

Albert.G 11-04-2007 01:27 PM

most likely your axles toastt

Jay351 11-04-2007 01:30 PM

Sound like your CV joint is broken.

Check out the boots covering the axle, if you see a rip you should replace the joint.

fillsrunner4 11-04-2007 01:34 PM

cv's i would bet as well

typical8o8 11-04-2007 01:48 PM

i was thinking CV's too but shouldn't it still make noise in 2wd if he has drive flanges?

Albert.G 11-04-2007 05:10 PM

if he has manual hubs, the axle doesnt spin, therefore only in 4wd

nate V 11-04-2007 05:26 PM

Seems to me that it could be one of two things wheel bearing or Axle shaft. I have done all four bearings in my truck. The ones in the front only made noise when I ran it in four wheel. When they got really bad they sound like a meat grinder all the time. On the plus side if you have to do the axle shafts they it would be easy to replace the wheel bearings at the same time.

To check the axle shaft just reach thru the wheel well and shake the axle shaft like you were checking the play in a drive shaft side to side, up and down, and back and forth. Any excessive play is a good indication that they are worn out and need to be replaced.
Oh yeah if you do need to replace them then there is a good chance that the lower ball joints need to be removed to do it.

let us know how it works out

my 93 4runner was recently doing the same thing clicking and knocking in 4wd i though it was the cv and i replaced it only to find out that my ring and pinion gears were completely stripped so u should drain ur front diff fluid and see if there is metal in it

wncmtnrunner 11-05-2007 01:31 PM

thanks for all the replys i sounds like ill have to be fixing that

wncmtnrunner 11-05-2007 01:47 PM

but the fact that it does it only when i turn does that meen something diffrent

elripster 11-05-2007 03:41 PM

Clicking noises from CV joints when turning sounds like a classic worn CV to me. Now don't necessary get too worried, I have seen cars drive for 50,000 miles on clicking CV joints. If you can make it go away by unlocking the hubs I'd just get a used shaft and keep it handy.

Checking for worn parts like bearings is never a bad idea but your symptoms really sound like worn outer CV symptoms to me.

i have the auto hubs what do i do and how much do cv joints run

Albert.G 11-06-2007 03:17 PM

auto hubs or a.d.d

elripster 11-06-2007 04:03 PM

If you have auto hubs, I'd first convert to manual hubs. If you have ADD and want to keep it, then yeah you need to look at a half shaft. Check the boards for used ones or you can just call your local parts store for a reman.

cvs for go for like $80 but they have like a $90 core charge

AndYota 11-06-2007 05:50 PM

I got a pair of new shafts for $140 without a core. They're Napa, but I've done some pretty good wheelin' since and they've held up really well.
