4.56 or 4.88?

I recently bought a 1993 Toyota PU, 5 speed, 33x12.50, with 190,000, stock 4.10. I've read tons of forums, nothing comparing 4.56 or 4.88's. My question is, what is your experiences with these ratios and 33's. I don't do any interstate driving, some highway. I live in Kentucky, which means I have tons of hills. I have 4.56 in my 03 Fx4 level II Ranger with 4.0 and 5 speed, it's geared like 4.30's with stock tires, I love it. I just wanna be able to use 5th in my Yota and regain its power, while being somewhat economical. 4.56's or 4.88's in my Yota, I'd like to be able to go 65-70 occasionally without blowing my 22re.

My ranger has 33x12.50 also.

I had an 87 4Runner with 33x12.50s and put in 4.88 gears (stock was 4.10). Speedo was back to dead-on and seemed the perfect ratio for the 33s, highway and around town.

I’m running 4.88s with 32s and I can still get 20ish mpg between 65 and 70mph. I spend a lot of time pulling grades in the mountains and it’s really nice to be a little over geared for climbing and descending.

if possible please tell us your rpm at 70 mph with your 4.88. thanks.

an extremely fast google search resulted this.

this topic is beat pretty regularly considering both of those gear options were found in stock toyotas so its an easy swap. some good info on roundforge, even where to find the gears you want.

Always go with the lower gears.

My 22RE is stock, I run 32's and 4.56 gears. It runs like stock. Speedo is dead accurate, and I get 20mpg on the highway. I wouldn't want to run any bigger tire with the poor 22RE.

Like a previous poster mentioned, I think a big question is do you have hills?

My 93 V6 has stock 4.56, and it is screaming at 3500+ rpm on the interstate with 31x10.50s. Seems to me if I had a 4 cyl that would be a good ratio.
