3VZE Crank pulley won't come off

I am rebuilding my 3VZE from my 93 truck due to a spun rod bearing. Can anyone give me some advise on how to get the crank pulley off? I can not get it to budge. I am sure someone must know the trick.

Bolt grip puller set

Unless you are talking about the timing belt drive gear on the crank. In that case, just pry the thing off and buy a new one if you ruin it. Its about the only way.

I usuall just tap the crank pulley all around the edges with a rubber mallet, Dony hammer the snot out of it, just kinda tap it with some authority... Usually after 4 or 5 taps it pops right off.

You can try removing the bolt and spraying with penetrating oil then use two pry bars one at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock and work back and forth. Make sure to thread the bolt back in a little because if it breaks loose it could fall off and be damaged. If that doesn't work you need the puller shown above.

I made my own puller that bolted onto the pulley. I welded on a handle to it as well to help hold it in place. It worked really well just using some scrap metal i had.

Well sorry guys I wasn't too clear in my post. I neglected to say that I was asking about the timing belt pulley that is on the crank. I can't figure out how to get a grip on it without risking buggering up the teeth. Any ideas for that one?.

I read a post somewhere that said a trick is to drill and tap 2 holes in it 180 degrees apart.
Then use screws to push it off evenly. I'd guess 10-32 or 1/4" fine max.

You could try that. A lot of Toyota crank gears have M6x1.00 holes in them. If you are lucky you can use a puller to get those off. If not, you could try wrapping a rag around it and wiggling it with some channel locks to try and budge it. Or pry behind it but you run the risk of damaging the crank tooth wheel.

Can you see the woodruff key? The slot in the shaft is half-moon shaped to match the key (the key is flat on the pulley side). If the key moves with the pulley as you pull it, it will rotate in the curved slot and jam.

If this happens, shoot a little PB Blaster (Liquid-Wrench, etc.) on the key, then gently tap it in with a very small pin punch. It won't move enough to see, but it may rotate back to where it is supposed to be and stop jamming the pulley.

Good luck!

Yes I can see the key. I will try squirting some Liquid Wrench in there. I tried heating the pulley to get it to expand a bit but no luck. There are no holes in the pulley so I guess drilling and tapping for a puller is the next step. I hate to ruin the pulley, the local dealer wants over $325 for a new one. What a pain!

I believe you were quoted the price for the wrong part if I understand what you are having troubles with. You are having trouble with 13521P Pulley, Crankshaft Timing and it's like $50-60, correct? You were likely quoted for 13471 Pulley, Crankshaft.
