3VZE: Can the Oil Pan Be Removed, Engine in Place?
The engine on my '93 4x4 p/u was hydro-locked by the prior owner. I believe it has a broken rod or piston pin. I thought of removing the oil pan to locate the bad rod(s) and check for damage to the block. If the block looks ok I thought I'd pull the head(s) and removing the bad rod and piston from the top. One possible problem with this idea is that the oil pan bolts at the back of the pan are partially obscured by the cover plate on the lower section of the bellhousing. Can that plate be taken off with the engine and transmission in the vehicle? I know I'll have to remove the front differential as well. Is what I'm proposing better than pulling the entire engine? -- Matt

yes but the front differential needs to be dropped.. there are many threads on it. a lot of people do it to replace the rod bearings.. search for 3vze rod bearing replacement and some should come up.

I know Hudson. I've spent time at the truckstop there and bought a rifle at the Walmart. I'm in Lake Geneva, at the opposite corner of the state (southeast by Illinois.
