a 302 in my runner???
 

so as some of you know ive been complaining that my truck is weak
and i was thinking of some headers and exhaust, but i quickly abandon that and decided to do a swap, but the 3.4L dosnt have enough power for me

so while talking to kid in my class he suggested a ford 302 of the fox body mustang


1. will it fit
2. will it bolt up to my tranny
3. carb or fuel injected
4. how hard will the wiring be
5. will this be reliable

Yes it will fit.
I belive there are bellhousing adapters available.
Carb is easy to set up but fuel injection would be best.
About the same as a 3.4L swap, depends if you are just throwing a carb on there aswell.
People might argue that it wont be as reliable as the toyota engine but I say the 302 engines are great.
We have owned 2 trucks with them and they NEVER gave us any trouble.
(one had over 500,000kms on it)

well maybe but because their so easily adjustable you can get big power for cheap

but you gotta do what you gotta do

also how would my tranny handle this,
would first gear just spin the tires
would i need to adjust my gearing

i like the idea...carbs are better.

From my experiances (sorry Im a gm kinda guy) Small block chevy motors are cheaper to build. I just sold my old 305 out of my Camaro for $20 lol and I know of a few running 350s for the $300 range

Talk to Advanced Adaptors, they will have motor mounts and tranny adapters for you.

As for your tranny: you've got the R150F, so you're good. It's a good tough tranny, but you may have a bit of a time finding a clutch/fly wheel combo that will work.

On the Ford 302 vs GM 350 debate, I think I have to hand it to ford on this one. The 302 is a bullet proof motor(same with the 350), but a plain jane 302 in a mustang makes the same kind of numbers as a plain jane 350 in a trans-am. And while it's arguable that there is more "cheap" after market support for the 350, there are still millions of 302's out there, and there is no shortage of goodies for them.

i was told that its easier to use the 302 due to the distributor being in the front and gm has theres in the back and has issues with the firewall

so the final qustion
why carb?
id think fuel injected is more reliable

Also the buick 302 is another v8 that fits our rigs.

carbs are easy to tune, make more power, and are a right of passage into owning a cool car ;)

the best swap would be an LS2.

why ls2?

fuel injection > Carbs..

EFI offers better fuel economy, off road performance ( hills and whatnot) and better general power..

I would hate to run a carb ( even though they are VERY easy to set up )

I would go with the carb. Cheap to maintain, and easy to figure out when you have a carb, distributor and a coil. Here is a pic of my 1966 ski boat, a Ford with a carb, that's a Holley on it now, still have the original carb.

if i did get the 302 i would need new radiator wouldn't i ?
which mean custom brackets, hmm
what else do u guys think i would need?
