3.0 starter going?
I have a '94 4Runner v-6 5-speed. Every once in a while when trying to turn it over it sounds like the battery is dead. If I switch the key on and off for a couple of times it will start right up. It turns out that my battery is properly charged. So that shouldn't be an issue. I am able to push start it just fine, it just won't start with the starter consistently.
Do I need a new starter or is there a solenoid? Thank you! |
I just had this exact problem & changed the starter. no more starting probs.

99% chance its just bad contacts. Roger brown sells a kit: cheap fix and a hell of a lot cheaper than buying another starter.

I just went and got one from a online junkyard for 70 bucks shipped next day off of a 97 4runner, works great.

gawd, i had the same problem for over a year. lived with "praying for it to start the first time" and then having the nudge/push the truck to get it to start. very ambarassing at times!! :) did a lot of searching and posting here on yotatech and i decided to rebuild my starter. replaced the contacts and STILL had the problem! so i left it for another month and lived with it. then one day i decided to tear my dash apart and clean up my truck. i remember seeing that an alarm systems can cause the problem too and the prev owner had an old alarm system that no longer worked. so i tore out the brain of the alarm system. still had the problem. during the clicking, i paid careful attn and i could hear a click coming from my dash, near the ignition. so i followed some wires from where the alarm brain was and followed it over to the ignition. i found that a relay (im assuming the kill switch for the alarm) was zipped tied to the wires that connect to the ignition. so i cut the zip tie and left the relay hanging. now it starts EVERY TIME! weird.
