3.0 mystery hesitation, backfiring, sputtering etc...

Hi Folks,
I've got something bothering me with my truck, so any input, ideas, similiar expieriences, or whatever i would really appriciate hearing.
I've got a '90 pickup 4x4 3.0 auto. the other day i was out wheelin it and i hit a tree, not all that hard but enough to push in the grille and whatnot, the engine and radiator appear to have been intact. but since this happend, it runs like crap. it idles fine, but when i go to give it some it just sputters and backfires and almost stalls. this only seems to happen when it is in gear, when it is in park and and i no-load it, it sounds fine, but in gear its pretty hesitant and choppy.
I am thinking maybe this sounds like something to do with a Mass Air flow sensor, or something like that, but i dont really know...
Anyone ever have anything like this happen to them?
thanks alot
-dirt

Check the tubing from your mass air flow sensor to the throttle body and make sure that you didnt knock some part of it loose.

Thanks, Jason
I will check that out, except now I am confused because
someone just told me that they dont think I even have a MAF on this engine as it is too old? (I can't check it because i am 100 miles from the rig right now) does anyone know what years have the MAF?
thanks alot

LoL not to get off topic or even talk about another vehicle other than toyota on here, but my 88' chevy beretta has a MAF. And im almost 100% possitive that anything that is fuel injected has a MAF.

The maf is the box on top of your airfilter that has some wires going to it.

they are correct, a 3.0L v6 (3vz-e) does not have a MAF (mass air flow.) It instead has a VAFM (vane air flow meter) that does the same thing....

Might also check your timing with a timing light....also check your battery connections. TPS (throttle position sensor) could be an issue too.

I'm betting on a torn or loose intake tube as well.

It's the intake pipe(hose)that goes to the throttle body. When you hit the tree the air box, pipes, hoses and all got pushed backward slightly and broke the rubber hose.I've done it myself, but I got the radiator too.

Yes I must agree. I didn't hit a tree, but mine had a small hole it it from rot, and my runner ran like s#*#!t

I wasnt taking a shot at you so chill out...this community is a fairly tight knit community, and far more laid back than pirate and the other forums, but if you come in here with an attitude and blatently flame people who are trying to help, you wont last long......

But yeah, welcome to the forum.

Not all, some systems use a map and barometric pressure sensor. Just fyi
