3.0 Cam question

Im doing the head gasket job on the 4runner I just bought and one of the cams has a chunk missing. Very similar to Bumpin Yotas cam. click here see post #46 https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ht=head+gasket
I read on there that you could just smooth the edges and use the cam. But only one person said that and a lot of other people are saying replace it. Can I get away with using the broken cam?

Im on a tight budget so im trying not to buy any parts I dont need. But if I do need to get a new cam is there anything else I need? Maybe new lifters???

honestly...i would just pony up the dough and get a new cam. It just doesn't make sense to me to put a large time and money investment into something only to have a big question mark hanging over you. Just do it right the first time and you won't have to worry later.

I would think you would need new shims with a new cam but maybe I am wrong...? Anyone out there know better?

Hope this helps,

Jon

Yeah thats kinda what im thinkin, dont want to have to tear into it again any time soon.

So what about the lifters and shims? Anyone else?

are you talking about getting a stock replacement cam or an aftermarket(i.e. Weasky2k's)? If you look in my HG thread, I had a chunk missing as well, Johnny's cam grinder said it looked ok, and when I got them back after the regrind I cant even find where the chunks were...

Johnny's come with shims to use in conjunction with the stock ones.

can't help you with lifters or stock cams....

Im gonna have to post up a pic of the cam. After talking with a few people about it I think its gonna have to be replaced. Pretty much the entire ring is gone on one side and on the opposite side pobably half is gone.

This is what keeps the cam in place, correct? If so I think there might not be enough surface to keep it still.

Anyways. Im gonna get a new cam. But do I need to replace the lifters? I dont see any abnormal wear on any of them. Remember this is a budget build and if the motor only last another 30k id be happy.

Govtmule: I sent you an email, your inbox was full. I need a cam pretty quick. I want this thing running next weekend.
