3.0 to 22r/re swap

This is kind of a strange situation but bare with me. I use to drive an 87 22r 5pd truck, it has a new long block in it and some LCE headers. It is a great running motor/tranny but the frame ended up rotting out, so I bought a 88 truck that has the 3.0/5spd in it with 180,000 miles. The 3.0 engine still runs and I plan to run it until it dies but I really loved the 22r. I dont need the extra power of the v6 and the fuel economy/reliability of the 22r was awesome. So finally my question is what all will need to be done to swap the 22r to a 22re and drop it into the v6 truck. I will be putting the engine/tranny/transfercase all into the truck. I still have the complete running 22r truck, and frame swap is not an option as the 88 is SAS already...thanks for any help I will continue to do lots of research! and if all you have to say is 3.4, its already ruled out because I have the 22r already

you're gonna need all the EFI components from a 22re. That'll get you started. NExt I would assume you just need a wiring diagram to wire it up. Then you'll have to custom make motor mounts, x-member tranny mounts, etc.

PS I totally understand the 22r thing. Toughest engines on earth IMO

Why would he need to fab mounts? Why not just use the stock ones from the donor truck? The cross member should work as is but it's easy enough to check that.

well i should be able to fit it in fine, swaping the 22re stuff over shouldnt be bad, but how about the wiring? any body got any advice?

1)sell it and buy a truck with blown 22re

2)3.4 swap

The V6 frame mounts are in a different place than the 22R mounts. You cannot just drop the engine in and bolt everything up. Thats why when going from a 4cyl to a 3.4L, you have to A. buy ORS' weld on mount kit or B. fab your own.

this is what i want to do also, someone has had to do this

I thought I heard something about the 88 v6 runners being different from the others when it comes to the motor mounts. I dont know about this but if I remember right the mounts in the 88 v6 runner are more like the 22re mounts and different from all the others. This was discovered while trying to swap in a 3.4 into an 88 only to find it wouldnt bolt up....

I could be completely wrong I just heard something about it.

Good question you have there...I dont have an answer for you but that I can tell you is that a 95' V6 engine fits right into an 88' pick-up. hahah I dont know anything about the 4 bangers mounts but I am fairly sure that anything 90' and down will fit into eachother..

i would like to know if this is correct, i am in need of a v6 motor for my 88 and finding one is not easy, my buddy wo is a toyota mechanic said that the 88 does have a different part number than the 89-95's do.

im trying the same thing. did you get yours in? if so can you advise me on what all i have to do?v6 to 4cyl im saying. thanks

This thread is six years old.

I went from 22r to 3.4 and I can tell you that the mounts will have to be cut off, relocated and raised to go from 6 to 4cyl.

The best and easiest way to go is just bolt a 3.4 in and go. Offroad solutions (ORS) or toy only swaps will make a plug and play harness.
Do not forget about different trans and transfer case for a 4cyl.
