2nd Gen LSD Diff question

Hello all,

I’ve earned some money and I’ve been thinking about putting a pair of Aussie Lockers front and rear of my 2nd gen, importing them from the USA (I’m from Barcelona).

I talked with the American Aussie Dealer and was decided to pick them until I’ve noticed one thing.

I’ve been watching the off-road.com Differential Identification chart and noticed one thing.

My rear differential is a factory LSD, although now it acts like an open diff.
My diff code is G295, this means 8’’, 4.100 gears and 4 pinion LSD.

Aussie only sells lockers for 8’’ 2 pinion diffs. So, I’ll have to go to Powertrax No-Slip…

I want a silent locker cause my 4Runner is my daily driver.

My question is, somebody knows if and 8’’ 4 pinion locker will work with my 8’’ 4 pinion LSD diff?

What other lockers can I put? I want to put a silent locker like Aussie…

What can I do?

Thank you very much,

David

I have same vehicle and same problem, LSD doesn´t work any more. I´d want the locker which works softly, not on-off type because here is winter at winter, ice and snow. I think it´s not nice if the locker locks just while turning in icy corner. You may spinn.

i think you may need to find a standard, open carrier to be able to install that type of locker

Blizzard 01-09-2005 12:42 PM

And what If I put a locker that have new carrier? Will that solve my problem?

I think that finding a non LSD carrier here can be very difficult...

If I could find a 4 pinion non-LSD carrier could I use my gears?

Thanks,

David

PD: Matti, I've been twice in Finland :)

I´ve never been in Spain :) ,but I´d like to. This winter sucks here, it´s rained almost just water many weeks now. :( I´d want snow, lot of snow.

Tell me if you figure out this rear lock problem.

AgRunner06 01-10-2005 10:06 AM

I bet you could just have your factory LSD rebuilt. You could also try changing your diff fluid to the stuff that is meant for LSDs. That might be a cheaper option then replacing it.

Sorry no suggestions on the locker problem.

:bounce2:

Thanks,

I've the right LSD fluid, and it's expensive!

My truck is 10 1/2 years old, so I think it's normal...

Also I want a full locker.

I've been talking with a mechanic and said me that he thinks that if I use some locker with new carrier (Like ARB, Offrotec, Powertrax No-Slip...) it will be fine.

Will this fit to my 4-pinion LSD rear diff? http://www.offroadtoystore.com/Merch..._Code=TrueTrac

Blizzard 01-14-2005 06:00 AM

I think that It will fit.

I'm looking for a Detroit SoftLocker instead.

Anyone else? Opinions, please.

-MaTTi- 01-19-2005 01:22 PM

One Toyota-guy told me this "Detroit True Trac for Toyota 8" V6/ turbo" will fit to LSD rear end! Yeah. I think that is the best locker for my use.

Blizzard 01-19-2005 01:36 PM

Yep, this means that we can fit the lockers that have a new carrier like I supposed...

For my use will be better a Detroit SoftLocker.

Yesterday I took my Toy to the mechanic to install my front Aussie Locker.

We had a problem with the thrust washers. Mine were worn, but Toyota have near 40 different thicknesses washers!!!

So I must take the truck to the mechanic, take off my front diff, removing my thrust washers, measuring them and ordering 3 or 4 sizes up.

This is a bull˟˟˟˟, because we must wait 2 or 3 days to have the new washers here, and I need my truck...

If I put a Detroit in the rear diff, will I have to pass the same? :(

Thanks Matti for your confirmation about that, I'll be earning money to buy a Detroit in the States and importing it (It's very cheaper than buying it here!)

Yeah, I was going to sat use a carrier-style locker for the rear, and not a lunchbox locker. Glad you got the info you needed. :bigok: Good luck.

Blizzard, how many kilometers do you have in your 4Runner? Just thinking maybe I have the same situation if/when I install mine (I have 267 tkm).

Maybe you already have read this article: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/detroit_locker/

Ahahaha I beat you! :P My 4Runner have 279.000km with only two serious problems.

One head at 210.000km and the A/C radiator bored 10 months ago.

I'm seeing your signature... 33'' with only 40mm BJ Spacers and 50mm coil ones?

Don't they rub? And what gear ratio have you?

Mine is a 4.110 ratio (G295 diff code).

I´ve heard about cylinder head problems also... Do you know why and what goes wrong? I bought this car half year ago from Germany, I don´t know much of these motors... (never sold in Finland). I have no A/C. :(

Yes, I have 33x10.50 tires. There is minor rubbing at full articulation in front(mud flap/inner fender) when you turn at the same time, that´s with no lift at all. I make little modification to mud flaps with knife to compensate it (it still rubbed, I think it makes no harm). I think it has to be same situation now although I have those BJ spacers (nothing limits more in-travel than before). But now I have to try much harder that I can get them rub, I think it never could do it at street, only when you really off-road-drive. I like of this combination (spacers + 33x10.50) now, just enough for me. :bigok: (now I have 265/75R16 winter tires with studs)

I have same diff code (it´s 4.100). I think it´s still quite acceptable.

This is a better picture of my 4Runner w/33" and no lift (no front mud flaps):http://www.petrisimolin.net/gallery/...-4Runner01.jpg My avatar is made by my brother with some kind of photoshop (he´s raised it a little) to make it look like it looks now.

daily drive with a locker = ARB Air Locker or a Toyota E-Locker...

Blizzard 01-20-2005 02:14 PM

Cylinder heads tend to break when they are about 200.000 km old.

The later version of our engine (1KZT-E) sold in Land Cruisers (KZJ90/95) was improved.

Anyways, I'm ready to change heads every 200.000km, because it's the only engine problem I've had...

For curiosity, in the highway, with my 265/70R15 or my 30x9.5x15 tires at 3000rpm I'm travelling at 120km/h, wich speed would you be in 5th gear at 3000rpm? Aren't gears too much long with 33''?

Thanks,

David

I´m a little afraid of this head problem... (cost honey and strawberrys, we used to say :) I think I have still original cylinder head. Maybe people break the head ´cause they forget to after cool it after heavy use. You have to idle it about 0.5-2 min after motorway driving.

I have about 2350-2400 rpm/100 km/h, so 3000 rpm it goes about 125-127 km/h (real speed). I think the overall ratio is a little bit too high, but it´s not so precise with good-torque-diesel. Maybe the biggest problem is to drive 50 km/h, when 3rd gear is about 2000 rpm, but 4th gear is a little bit too high (it makes little resonation). Well, 2000 rpm is not much, I just have used to drive with slow rpm with bigger diesel. And after all, the 4LO is still short enough.

I think you two need to sell your trucks in the US. People here would KILL for a turbodiesel 4Runner with limited slip diffs...
