2nd Gen 4runner 3.0 intake options

Okay, I've been searching alot on here today to get as much info as I can about intakes and exhaust for the 2nd gen 4runners and the reports seemed to be a mixed review regarding the FIPK, but I read a good review of the Weapon R intake and I was wondering, if you were going to do your first mod to your bone stock automatic 3.0 4runner, would you choose the Weapon r or perhaps the Dynomax turbo muffler catback first? They both cost roughly the same, I'm just looking to see if one gives a little more throttle response over the other. I'm not expecting a whole lot, but the other posts seem to indicate that there is at least some noticeable difference to be had. What say you ?

BTW, I live in CA. so it has to be CARB legal which limits what I can do. I already found that the Weapon R and FIPK intakes are CARB legal, so I at least have those as options.

Exhaust..First..Headers are what u need first..Doug Thorley Headers..they have a nice sound and good performance boost..and then Magna Highflow cat..and Muffler..For intake if u have spare time..ISR mod is the way to go Intake Silence Removal..Pretty much a custom K&N air intake, but saves u ALOT more money..and I believe They are all 50 State Legal not + tho. just make a list and decide on what u have money for now and what u want to save up for later..I wud do the Headers first personally. That way its out of the way..

Im with SoCal, save up and get an Aussie for the rear diff. It'll make your friends scratch

their heads when they're stuck on the trail with their shiny intake and youre going up

the trail with your Aussie.

I had a Weapon-R Dragon intake on my Hyundai Elantra when I used to autocross and drag race it, and speaking from experience, I had better results with a home fabbed CAI using 3" exhaust tubing from JCW and a cheap cone filter. Almost a .3-4 avg difference in a 1/4 mile time. So I would stay away from those things.

I'm with the other two, LOCKER LOCKER LOCKER.

Performance mods do nothing if you get stuck.

1. H to f case swap... http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autocrawler/

2. Then RaDesigns shift controllers modded to "flappy paddles" http://radesignsproducts.com/default.aspx

3. Headers, prolly Downey/LC Engineering.

4. And of course an Aussie locker in there somewhere...

BTW, 2, 3 and 4 are not in any particular order...

Ya know, I forgot to mention that it's the family truckster that only sees 4WD action when it snows up here (which is fun btw, lol). My wife mostly drives it so it's not being taken to any trails or anything. I was just looking for a little more usable power and I don't have the $$ for the headers although that does sound like the best bang for the buck.

well if she's driving or any inexperienced wheeler then I would not go with any locker at any time especially in snow/ice conditions as it's a little tricky to drive.

Yeah, I'm not going to mess with getting a locker or changing gears. The most I'll do is probably an intake and Dynomax turbo muffler when the funds allow it and call it a day.

There's no power to be had in the intake (except for radical mods), but a good muffler like a Borla Turbo will give a noticeable boost in power if installed with a 2.25" cat back.

But JDS1992 is right that the best mod for the 3VZE is headers, and Doug Thorley ceramic or LC Engineering are the best by far. Magnaflow cat to round out the exhaust side. ISR is fine; just don't expect much from it.

Right on man..no pressure in it..just put an intake and Muffler on it..for now and then save up for the headers..and let me no how the Dynomax turbo muffler works out and sounds..because Im deciding between that flowmaster 40 and a magnaflow muffler..

Funny you should mention the Magnaflow, I called a muffler shop to ask what it would cost for a dynomax turbo and he tried to steer me to the Magnaflow. I'm leaning towards the Dynomax 'cuz it's cheaper and is chambered. I'm fearful of straight thru mufflers as I'm afraid I'll lose torque, lol.

This is my custom intake...just two 45 degree bends, some silicon couplers, cone filter adapter, and a bracket to hold the AFM. Engine & tranny dipsticks are easily accessible unlike my first design with one 45 degree bend. I can take some better pics later if anyone wants them. Oh and don't laugh at my temporary sock breather and broken fan haha.
