255/85/16 Got 'Em and Other Work

Been working on the truck, mostly on electrical and interior. Will do another thread on that stuff, what I did, etc.

But here's some pics of the tires I just picked up! The Maxxis Bighorn is gnarly, I can't wait to test them out. After doing a lot of reading on this site and other 4x4 sites, I went with the 255/85/16 size, after picking up some Tacoma steelies from craigslist ($20 each!) The tires wound up costing about $167 each, mounted and balanced. They were hard to find, I heard that Maxxis dealers were sold out of this size until later this month. There was an Ebay dealer that had some for cheaper, but they were out as well.

As you can see, the rear is out of the truck, and I have new OME springs to put in, with OME shocks. Also, the 4.88 chunks will go in, along with SDORI spacers up front.

I'll probably have some questions about the shock mounting, when I get to that (flip kit), but anyway here's the pics.

Yopar, your truck's gona be awesome! Nice tire choice.

Thanks! yeah, I really like the tires... well as much as you can like a tire that isn't on the vehicle... $600 mounted is a good deal, I could have gotten them cheaper on ebay, there was a place that had them for $590 WITH shipping, but they were out of stock, and would be back in stock in July... So I had to pay tax and a higher price locally.. no bigee...

I'm going out in the garage now to strip the rear housing apart.

The new tires look nice. Unrelated and just an FYI... It looks like you have a jack stand sitting on top of a piece of plywood which is then on top of a cinder block... Cinder blocks are not a good idea for holding a vehicle up. I'd recommend finding a safer solution ASAP.

To me, the new OME bushings that came with my kit needed to be sleeved in the front bushings in order for the new bolts to fit nicely.

I found some bushings at Skycraft (the BEST store you will EVER visit) and used 2x945's and 2x1200's in each bushing for a perfect fit.

I had to cut the exhaust to make room for the shackle. Maybe later a new exhaust will go on.

what size spacers are you putting up front?

nmtoy 06-19-2008 05:20 AM

The rear looks really good! Nice truck.

Thanks. The spacers going in the front are SDORI's 1.5"

Today the front end gets put up and stripped apart for them, and to install the front 4.88 chunk. Hope to have it all rolling again by next week. Then I'll get the shocks mounted in the rear, still have to figure out what's best for that. I may use the stock upper mounts and move them more directly over the axle.

Man, that's a nice looking tire. I was wobbling between those and the Treadwrights. Ended up going with the treadwrights for a few reasons, but I may grab a set of the Bighorns eventually. When you get some miles on them, let us know how they do on and offroad.

Djlarroc 06-19-2008 12:32 PM

Nice work Yopar. Truck looks great. I also had to cut my exhaust when I did the longer greasable shackles.

P-Lo 06-19-2008 12:58 PM

YoPar, Where did you buy your tires?

Got 'em at Action Gator in Orlando. They had 3 on hand and 1 had to be shipped from somewhere else, so it took about a week.
