22RTE stumbles, hesistates, misfires, surges. HELP!

Let me start out by saying this is a 1986 22RTE Toyota xcab auto to manual swap. Problem started out small with an intermittent rough idle and 12-14mpg. All of a sudden a couple days ago the problem got a whole lot worse. It now stumbles, hesitates, misses, surges on acceleration and at cruise. This was with hot engine. Haven't tested it cold yet. One thing I find odd is with driving with TPS unplugged should the check engine light come on? Mine doesn't. I did pull some codes but unknown if they are old. HELP!

Things I've tried:
plugged vacuum line on egr=no difference
tested TPS with ohm meter=good
drove with TPS unplugged=rougher, higher idle but no change at cruise or accel
new cap, rotor, NGK stock plugs, wires
Idle screw all the way in and it idles around 800rpm.
Timing set at 5 BTDC with connector jumped.
Took apart the IACV =it was clean.
Seafoamed the engine downstream of the TPS.

Are they secret?

Codes are how your ECU tells you what you cannot see. Until you resolve the codes, everything else you do is just stalling for time.

that sounds like air is getting into the system somewhere other than where it should.

check all vacuum line routing, and test for vacuum leaks.

you can bypass that warm-up valve for testing purposes, what i did was degrease the area inside of the throttle body, around the big hole where the flow comes in at.

i then used that wide clear tape to block the hole off entirely, making sure that the tape was long enough to come out the end of the throttle body, then folded in over, so that it was pinched by the air intake tube... that way it won't get sucked into the engine.

reset the ecu, by disconnecting the battery, or pulling the efi fuse, to get a fresh read on the codes.

Scope, I had 3 codes. I remember one was code 14 which is overboost. Can't remember the other 2. I presume they are old because in the year I've owned it, the CEL has never came on and these problems have come up since then. When i unplugged the TPS shouldn't that cause the CEL to stay on? Anyone in Tacoma area got a turbo ECU i can borrow?

osv, I sprayed brake cleaner all around the throttle body and every vacuum line i could possibly find. no change in idle.

In case anyone is wondering if I figured it out or not I believe I did. I performed a compression test today and discovered I have a dead hole (cylinder #1). The other cylinders have 110psi each. I then ripped off the top of the motor and its all sitting on the garage floor. In my disassembly I discovered the turbo is shot. Its melted and cracked by the waste gate.

So I have some decisions to make. Do I have the whole engine rebuilt or just have the head rebuilt? Or should I buy an entire brand new 22RTE head. I presume its more expensive of course. The turbo is another problem. I gotta figure out if I wanna get a CT26 from a supra or get a garrett T3. Any input appreciated.

discovered I had a burned valve in cylinder #1. also found out the exhaust manifold was cracked. bought a chinese header. reinstalled broken CT20 for now until I get around to T3 conversion. Engine runs so smooth now and got 17 mpg up snoqualmie pass. Thats not bad at all.

symptoms came back on the other side of the mountains. Left me stranded in Cashmere forcing me to use a shop. Turned out the fuel pump was bad. $500 repair bill.

Well before you go one or the other I use a GT28rs on the stock manifold. Used to be a Gt25 which was cute but had a retardly short spool time and no upper end boost. T3 is good just because its so easy to get a hold of and most manifolds are T3. The only issue with a T3 or a GT28rs is that the stock ECU wont handle it. It will go into fuel cut at the high end. I didnt get that with the GT25 though and stock internals will handle a GT25 no problems.

I ran a 300zx t3 turbo on my 22rte, with a stock 22rte computer. the way to get rid of fuel cut, is by opening the afm and tightening the afm circle spring. it will lean out a little on idle with stock 22rte 295cc injectors. the best injector setup I ran was the lime green 7mg injectors on 21psi in my celica, you can lean the afm way out and it idles just fine.
